Buying a new TV

Tell me what you KNOW please?
If I buy a new Samsung Smart TV( made in Mexico) in the U S. will I have to pay duty on it at the border or any IVA taxes to bring it to Baja? :?::?:

I just bought a new L.G. smart T.V. in Ensenada not that much if any difference in price as compared to the U.S and if you buy in the U.S. you pay sales tax there and may have to pay IVA (sales tax ) when you bring it in.:?::?::?:

Yes, we are considering just buying it here instead of the trip north cost & possibly duty & IVA tax too. Just wondering if it says on it Made In Mexico if it was possible to pay nothing?

No. NAFTA agreement eliminated import duty on participating countries. What you pay when crossing US/CAN/MX borders with goods made in these countries, is not an import tax but a sales tax. I mail-ordered one item to Canada from New Zealand and had to pay both sales tax AND import duty, which was quite painful.

China-made and NAFTA-sold goods also seem to be included in NAFTA tax exempt, for reasons unknown. Must be same reasons that led to demise of the world economy when everybody moved factories to China. Corporations need to make a few pennies, so poor, OMG...

Try to find one inside Mexico that even comes anywhere close.

Most flat screen TV's I've seen are pretty much double the US prices.

2 years ago I brought a 47 inch Toshiba down. Took it out of the box, stood it up behind my Camry's front seat with a blanket covering the screen. Had some other goods in the trunk and backseat. In San Ysidro told customs I had stuff for my house in Loreto and, after a casual look, got waved through.

An offtopic here, but "smart" in the model name denotes basic browsing capabilities, i.e. you can do "some" browsing and "some" web TV watching. I'm pretty sure that it still won't be able to handle my cable internet TV here NOB - this requires a proprietary set-top box from provider anyway.

Everyone has a laptop or PC (or both), so making regular flat TV a "smart" one is a simple matter of HDMI cable, or whatever wired or wireless solution you prefer. Anything that "smart" model will do, a computer will do same well or better, more choice of browsers, software add-ons and other options, and you will need a keyboard anyway.

There is no money printing press in my basement, so I'm trying not to buy new tech gizmos unless I absolutely have to. Of course other people might have different view on that.

MMc, I realize "smart" is what manufacturers call it. Sounds funny, yes.

TV that can be plugged directly into internet is just a TV with "some" functions of web TV set-top box. Consider that those set-top boxes are already limited in both functions and the ability to add/upgrade/modify the software... meh...

Upgrading ... is a pain, which sadly is part and parcel of the "digital age" ... it never stops

Must say having a display which is wireless has many benefits, providing you planed ahead and have a receptacle located "behind" the new "Smart TV" ..

Might look a Vizio ... a claim has been filed against them for ... aaahhh, not correctly labeling their refresh rate's

Might be some coming back with low miles ... and a price drop

We picked up on with a 120 mHz refresh, which was NOT one of those identified in the suite

Not bad, 42" wireless, 1080P plus 3D .. for 450 ... have the Apple TV, which allows me to use my mac mini on the display .. and stream movies to the display from an external HD which I have copied all our videos on too in .m4p and cataloged using a software data base, which I serve to other devices from the mac mini and can be accessed from off site

Just look through by Genre or search ... and make a selection and then watch ... on a mac one must buy software to play Blue-ray movies .. as Apple did not move on the Blue-ray .... go figure .. they have HDMI .. ?? and will display full 1080p .. maybe they will put it on the i- ____

Something to kill time with and save time in looking for things ... now I've got to work on the "popcorn"

Stick with a major brand, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, LG, etc.

The Sceptre brand has a fairly high percentage of bad reviews on Amazon.

Samsung makes great TVs. I was always a Sony guy but theirs are just as good (comparing apples to apples in features) and for much less dollars, pesos.

I have noticed that the price spread between TVs in Mexico and TVs in the US have come down significantly in the six years I have lived here. If I have to replace a TV down here (unlikely as we watch maybe a movie a week) I would buy one down here at a Sams or Costco and not deal with crossing the border.

Try this out if you get bored - run a RJ-45 cable from your laptop, which is on your home network, to the screen and see how easy it is to play what you want "On Demand".

When friends drop over I put rodrigo's playground on the screen. We get comfortable and crap our pants laughing.

I have seen more than 10 flat screens brought through San Ysidro by different people and they never got hit with the IVA. May be something about personal use. Most were waved through, some were seen by Aduna and not bothered with.

Alm is spot on. smart TV is a marketing ploy. take a look at your PC, your mobile devices, how long before that software is obsolete? now imagine that software buried in your TV! hook is right stay with samsung, use Roku, chromecast,one of those gizmos.

TV's are just another monitor, I have see jumbo trons run with Ipads.
Most DJ's use Ipads and projectors to stage the visuals at clubs. Roku and such will pass away too. All of your home entertainment will be software driven over the internet soon via phones, pads, and lightweight computers. I would not buy a TV without a USB port and a HDMI port today. I am sure they are available in Mexico.

Wireless display is nice if this in itself doesn't cause new problems like slower speeds. And, if you really plan ahead, you don't need it wireless because the source - laptop, or set-top box, or network receptacle in the wall - will be right behind your TV. No such luck. The very nature of digital progress will stand in the way.

To me, as long as remote has mouse pointer on screen and basic functions like back/forward skip, subtitles on/off, full screen on/off (if the source is a computer) - I'm happy. Old remote by Gyration still works - paid $25 or so, years ago, and there is "air mouse" with same Wii-style gestures. Next time when you are about to throw away a fully functional 4-years PC or laptop - keep it and use as your "hard" media center. Software is infinitely upgradable, hardware doesn't matter as you only use its ethernet adapter and RAM (which is also upgradable). HDD you can always get external - huge, or again upgrade the one in PC. DVD rippers/shrinks like DVD Fab and software players like VLC you will never have in boxes like WDTV/Roku/Apple, not to mention "smart" TV. Old PC is hidden in the TV stand, nobody cares. I won't be pulled into this digital rat race ;)

On buying a TV and talking it across ... We brought new things across ... just told them we were renting and were bring down "stuff" for our stay ... for a while ... worked every time ... however that was in 2009 -2011 ... imagine the crossing has changed quite a bit ... given "stuff" that has been going on ... since then

The display I replaced ... was an old Panasonic 42" plasma (720p) and used 480 watts ... gave to my brother in law.. along with a 60" Sony ... which power consumption was only 212 watts

a note, some of these "boxes" use more power than a refrigerator .. always looking to cut "power usage" by moving to computers for entertainment ... dropped all subscriptions to TV service around 7 to 8 years ago

I'm currently hard wired (j45) the only wireless connection is the wife's macbook pro, which will do AC ... but, have started migrating toward the wireless setup as the development of the gigabyte wireless has started moving forward ..

AT&T is supposed to introduce their new gigabyte wireless routers next year ...

Have put in a second router a Linkysis 2400 AC behind the AT&T 2.4 GHz router .. I can connect at 5 GHz wirelessly and it does make a big difference in wireless speed and/or data transmission .. a gigabyte wireless network is about the same as being "hard wired" which is a nice step in a faster direction for home entertainment ... in my case

I too prefer using a computer for just about everything ... and with this set up ... It appears I will be getting rid of my Thunderbolt display and moving to a larger display ... on the wall in my room, the Plasma used to be in my room, when I got the Sony ... moved the Panasonic into the front room with a PS3 for movies and Netflix et al ..

The kid likes Gaming, but, he likes single player ... so internet speed isn't all that important for him

I was just toying with this new 5GHz wirelesses ... to evaluate whether an upgrade on all devices would be something I would HAVE to do ... .. all can view movies using the 2.4 GHz net work, with no significant problems ... but, if something faster comes along ... why not, providing the costs are not past Pluto .. :biggrin::biggrin:

And still have an old G4 dual 1.25 and G5 which I still use for certain things .. in the garage and on the network, used to be able to run old Adobe CS2 on it ... but, Adobe stopped support and can't even run it anymore ... but, I don't really need it anymore .. most of the time

Dittos on the USB and HDMI connection on a "Display" as I'm not really looking for a "TV"

Any TV made in the last 3-4 years would have USB and HDMI inputs. With a pure "display" aka computer monitor, there is often no speakers in there, so there could be no HDMI either. TV speakers suck for the most part, anyway.

The whole issue - to bring or not to bring - is a non issue. If you pay tax, this is 40-60 bucks for a big screen. Find a place NOB where it's at least 50 bucks cheaper than in MX, keep your fingers crossed at the border, and keep 50 bucks in pesos ready. Oh well... What would nomads do if there wasn't something to flap our gums about...

I would get what you want and pay the tax. If you don't know where to go where you live,(in Mexico) then pay the tax. Or make a new friend and go to a place in Mexico. You're going to have the set for a while get what you want and make an adventure and a new friend. The story will be worth more then the savings. Your mileage my very!

Came out to price being almost the same as it would have cost in U.S. with NO taxes(including IVA) & believe it or not that TV sells for about $143.00 less if you buy it on time pmts.with no interest to be paid. :?::biggrin:What can I say" this is Mexico!:biggrin:
