Punta Conejo camping?

Beagle - 12-8-2014 at 08:29 PM

Hey Nomads. Going back down to Todos Santos In late January and wanted to do a little 1-2 day trip up to Conejo. Any tips from anyone that has been there?

Road conditions? Camping situation? I've heard of this Nardo character that is the caretaker.

Also, I'm bringing the girlfriend. Is this a bad idea? She surfs and has agreed to go scope it out with me.

Thanks for any help!

Been a few years since I've been there but there was a real bad red ant issue when me and my girl tented there. catch this place on a south swell and you'll never forget it . Especially if you are goofy foot. Surf fishing is ok

It will blow out early. We always camp north of the river just in case, downside so doing so is the wind in camp. Gets good on a west too.
Dish soap will kill all the ants, use it like holly water at mass.

Thanks Hombre and Mmc!

MMc-Why is it that you camp North of the river again? Because of flash floods?

Thanks guys!!

MMc - 12-9-2014 at 11:20 AM

Yes, I have seem the river running 3' deep didn't want to be on the wrong side if it happens again. I know most camp down in it, it's a much nicer camp.

The road to Conejo from Highway 1 is no big deal - I drove in/out multiple times for the 1000.

The Conejo sign at the highway is painted and steekered over - watch for it ~km80.

Here's what the road look like, about a mile from the highway:

Nardo is a cool guy, he's a talker though. ;) Last time I was down there, we found out we had the same birthday and he brought me a bunch of ceviche. Me and a friend were the only one camped there for 2 weeks in August. (That was 2009). It was hot as hell.

I've had much better luck in the winter time to be honest. The NW swells get in there just fine and i feel are better and more lined up going left. I'll surf the right when its crowded and its really fun too. I think the area gets pretty crowded in the winter around Christmas, and you're going to the bathroom in the bushes, so hope your GF is ok with that.

Next time I will probably camp further away from people and just walk to surf.

Yes, fishing is fun there, and the lagoon that forms inside during low tide is really fun for snorkeling.

So many replies! Wasn't expecting all of this. Awesome!

Road looks great. Sweet pic, Stuck! Probably be in 2x though but I'm sure we can hang.

Boojoo-you can surf the right there? What about in Jan? Yeah I'm worried about crowds and vibes and want to tread lightly.

Gotta see what she thinks about the bathroom in the cactus.

We are going late Jan so maybe some the Xmas crowd will have thinned out a little?

How far is the ride, once you leave the pavement more or less?

Thanks for all of the info!:bounce:

woody with a view - 12-9-2014 at 12:18 PM

the ride isn't that far. look at your map, it's right there! the right becomes rideable in the winter more than summer, but don't tell anyone.

as for the toilet situation, get a 5 gallon bucket and some 13 gallon trash bags. go to Sport Chalet and buy a toilet seat made to snap onto the bucket and us it for your needs. your chick will thank me! after a couple of days burn the bag on your campfire or take it with you and find a town dump for the bag. DO NOT leave toilet paper laying around. this is the new millennium!

Yes, a 2x will make it in fine, mostly hard packed sand with rocky gardens. Maybe a dozen miles in from the highway.

Looking north along highway 1 at the Punta Conejo turn off. The sign to Conejo is that whiteish thing, left side, behind the black truck. The dirt road is on the hard left, out of shot.

woody with a view - 12-9-2014 at 12:41 PM

that truck on the left has awesome rims and tires on the front!

Beagle - 12-9-2014 at 12:49 PM

Man, THANK you guys for all of the info. Amazing what you can find out these days with a few clicks and questions in the right place. I'll keep it to myself out there though.;)

Thinking we might drive up early one morning from Todos to get away from the crowds. If it's good and the lady approves, stay the night….if it's firing and supper chill….maybe two. Wish I could bring a dirt bike. One day.

Last question for now. It's been years since I've surfed BCS in winter. Ya think I will need at least a spring suit? I have a 2mm and that's it. Think I will be ok?

I'm sure I will post some more noob questions when they come up! Thanks again!

That's not a dual axle, but a 1.5 axle - they share the same tire.

As far as vibe out in the water, it never seemed that bad. There are a few (like 5) local guys that aren't very aware of surf etiquette but that's OK I guess. The rest are camping gringos. Luckily if there are waves there are plenty of room.

I'm curious on how it is down there now... I haven't been in 5 years.

As far as Cerritos being crowded... There have been about 3-4 major surf films recently showing guys like Dusty Payne, Mitch Coleburn, Yadin Nicol and the rest of the top video guys flying high at Cerritos. Luckily they don't say where they are, but if you've been there you'd recognize it!

Beagle - 12-9-2014 at 07:18 PM

I went back to Cerritos this Nov after a 12 year break. Wow! However it was a surprise that on the most crowded days there would be about 12 on the point and friendly. Most evenings there were max 4 of us on the point. It was really nice. Beautiful sunsets and empty waves. I'm sure it was from post Odile jitters. I know it will be different in Late Jan/Feb but that's fine. I'm no pro so I just need to catch a few each day to keep the craving going. :)

If she's not down for camping…Is it a pretty easy day trip from Todos? Maybe could just drive out before dawn and catch the morning. I figure mid to high tide cuz it's a reef right?

What about booties? Are Urchins an issue?

Edit-Sorry for the double post. Not sure how I did that.
