Fish ID?

chavycha - 12-28-2014 at 10:18 PM

Have caught a few of these in the past week. One off the beach and one over a shallow near-shore reef in about 20' of water.

Sargo? Some other kind of grunt?
Edible?

It looks like a Pacific porgy. Good eating!

Try cooking it whole (sans entrails) and de-scaled on the Barbie, and score the flesh diagonally every inch for a leetle ajo y jugo de limon y pimiento; don't overcook (of course, and just pick through the skeleton.... don't miss the cheeks.

Juan says here they call it Roncador...the snorer...and it's a perch. Did you get a photo of the fabulous halibut???

When I saw the stripe, Sargo is what came to my mind.

chavycha - 12-29-2014 at 02:11 PM

Shari, nope, it ended up on the fillet table and then in our bellies. Turns out you can't even give fish away in this town. :D

The stripe was pretty prominent on both specimens. Thought at first it might be a handling marking, but its definitely natural.

Sargo are good eating, as everyone else said. we got them by the ton last El Nino down at the tide pools in Sunset Cliffs the last time the tuna crabs showed up in SD, 2003ish?

Shari, show Juan this photo (what we call a 'spotfin croaker' or 'spottie'... it makes the pig or snoring sound out of water). In Mexico, it is called roncador... Black spot vs black stripe of a sargo... The yellowfin croaker also makes the croaking noise. You guys call that one the 'boca dulce'.

Spotfin Croaker, Roncador stearnsi (from Mexfish.com)

I love the variety of fish here! At home, when we go trout fishing, we catch trout. We've caught 22 species (and counting) in a couple weeks.

Here's another. Thought when it first came up that it was a tiny yellowtail. Not so much. It has fins like a wrasse but the head's not right.

You probably caught that fish fairly deep? Tile Fish I think.

chavycha - 1-11-2015 at 07:49 PM

Yep! That's it! I didn't check that one on Mexfish. Thanks! In about 150' of water.

Ocean tilefish / blanquillo.

I think often called Whitefish on the Pacific side?

Delicious...great for ceviche though it's a small one

Pompano - 1-12-2015 at 07:34 AM

Whitefish caught in 220ft over rockpile near Pt. Conception, Mulege. Using a 3 oz. green dart tipped with squid tidbit. Catch one and you can crank up a limit too quickly. Good table fare, but not much action.

A Canadian guy walks into a bar, on the stool next to him is some footwear. He says to the bartender, "What's this - a boot?"

poor mans yellowtail. easy to filet and delicious. just be careful handling em, slip your hand under the gill plate and you will bleed! grab em by the eyeballs (like a bowling ball) like you would a sheepshead ;)

chavycha - 2-24-2015 at 11:58 AM

And one more... this from the East Cape in about 200' of water. Huge eyes. Too short-bodied for a snapper. Wrong fin structure for a rosy rockfish.

Got it. A Popeye Catalufa.

Pompano - 2-24-2015 at 04:57 PM

My amigo, Ed, says that's the same species as this pop-eyed wonder caught in deep water near Mulege..and advises it's not very good for the dinner table.
