That's a Sargo,can be caught on various baits off the beach,my kids got them also in front of PaPa,s place.
Didn,t know they would take a bass plug tho!

Shari, nope, it ended up on the fillet table and then in our bellies. Turns out you can't even give fish away in this town.

Sargo are good eating, as everyone else said. we got them by the ton last El Nino down at the tide pools in Sunset Cliffs the last time the tuna crabs

Shari, show Juan this photo (what we call a 'spotfin croaker' or 'spottie'... it makes the pig or snoring sound out of water). In Mexico, it is called
roncador... Black spot vs black stripe of a sargo... The yellowfin croaker also makes the croaking noise. You guys call that one the 'boca dulce'.
I think often called Whitefish on the Pacific side?
Delicious...great for ceviche though it's a small one

Whitefish caught in 220ft over rockpile near Pt. Conception, Mulege. Using a 3 oz. green dart tipped with squid tidbit. Catch one and you can crank
up a limit too quickly. Good table fare, but not much action.

poor mans yellowtail. easy to filet and delicious. just be careful handling em, slip your hand under the gill plate and you will bleed! grab em by the

And one more... this from the East Cape in about 200' of water. Huge eyes. Too short-bodied for a snapper. Wrong fin structure for a rosy rockfish.
My amigo, Ed, says that's the same species as this pop-eyed wonder caught in deep water near Mulege..and advises it's not very good for the dinner
table.
