Boy did the dove and tweedy birds leave in a hurry! I zoomed in close but can't tell if this guy has a missing leg or not. Seems a little large for a
kestrel but Not sure. ??

Hi Russ, That looks like a Cooper's Hawk, an accipiter. They prey on birds.

Cooper's, or female Red Tail in winter? (not a birder, just askin' )Bob and Susan - 1-4-2015 at 02:21 PM
some bird person told me that hawks stand on one leg all the time...
the other leg is just hiddenBigOly - 1-4-2015 at 04:14 PM
It has been cold lately, just regulating it's temp. Did you ever notice how vultures fly with their legs hanging when the temps are high? Cooling
down.Russ - 1-4-2015 at 05:58 PM
I have noticed that and also seem to steer by them down.rts551 - 1-4-2015 at 06:05 PM
coopers hawk. we have yearly nesting pair in our yard in Arizona. Will not let me in the yard after the young hatch.
fro the above URL "Adults have red eyes and have a black cap, with blue-gray upper parts and white underparts with fine, thin, reddish bars. Their
tail is blue-gray on top and pale underneath, barred with black bands.[3] Immatures have yellow eyes and have a brown cap,"
After looking at a lot of images I found a few with a leg tucked up out of sight. It's a relief to think this bird is probably uninjured.

Shoot Russ, I was gonna recommend that you catch that rascal and put a little artificial leg on him but the experts spoiled that opportunity.bajabuddha - 1-5-2015 at 09:07 AM
If it's a female i'd name her Ilene. pappy - 1-27-2015 at 02:18 PM

Agree it's a Cooper's. handsome smallish birds. We had a family nesting in a tree on our street years ago.
Noisy, esp during meal times while teaching chicks how to kill/catch small birds.
We had lots of birdfeeders at our house. It was like watching Lions at the watering hole, the way they would hang out near the feeders. Circle of
life.
