Dorado from beach in Todos....

Tod - 1-6-2015 at 10:04 AM

Saw some corbina near the beach this morning. Got my light rod/reel with 14lb line and put on a mag darter. A dorado came streaking near the corvina and then turned around. I cast in front of him and bam, it was on! He jumped 6 times and it took a while to coax him onto the beach. Fun stuff! File for picture seems too big to send.

You were using a mag darter for corbina? Do they take something like that?

Tod - 1-6-2015 at 12:19 PM

Yes, fished really slowly. It can be retrieved a few inched below surface at a slow pace. Rabalo like them as well.

Last year, at The Wall I caught a bunch of halibut with the mag darter, same technique. I could see them follow it and then smack it. Waves were really small which helped as I waded out.

David K - 1-6-2015 at 01:07 PM

I want to know what coast on the Pacific has water that flat at shore (not in a bay)? Very nice sand beach!

sd - 1-6-2015 at 01:25 PM

Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

Real nice fish and my favorite grilled.

Interesting. Most fisherman think that corbina will only take bait from the bottom but I've caught them with Kastmasters in the past. That was many years ago and haven't duplicated that feat ever again. Halibut commonly take Krocs and kastmasters so I'm not surprised about that.

I met a fisherman a few years ago who told me that the yellowtail were crashing the surf so close that he ran in and kicked one up on the beach.

woody with a view - 1-6-2015 at 04:21 PM

I've seen guys casting to YT north of Bocana and bringing them in.

David K - 1-6-2015 at 04:30 PM

1980's At 'Variety Beach' (north of Laguna Manuela) we would get the best fish from the sandy bottom feeding corbina and croaker to calico bass (off the nearby rocks), and halibut as well. All using grunion for bait (collected during a run, then frozen). We replaced mussel (the all time corbina favorite food) with grunion as it was far easier to collect, store, and hook!

EVERYONE knows the all time favorite corbina bait are soft shelled sand crabs!

or Pismo Clam!!!

David K - 1-6-2015 at 05:10 PM

Sure, that's what they normally get to eat... you should try the others and see how they go crazy for a change in diet.

Pacifico - 1-6-2015 at 09:37 PM

Nice catch! Nothing better than fighting a fish with your feet planted in the sand!

tiotomasbcs - 1-7-2015 at 02:08 AM

What a catch! Pacific Ocean is flat and warm down south. Lots of Dorado being taken from tin boats, inflatables,& pangas launched from the beach...esp at Los Cerritos. Delicioso Dorado MMmmm. Pictures Mono?! Great foto. :bounce: Tio

Tod - 1-7-2015 at 07:30 AM

I agree Tito. We launched a tin boat last Tuesday and in short order had 4 BIG Sierra and 5 bigger Dorado just off the rocks. Filled the cooler quick! I actually need a break....one of the rare times that ever happens to me. I've smoked most of the Sierra I've been catching and been giving fish away like crazy. Going to Guadalajara today so I won't be tempted to fish for 5 days!

:o Anyone can catch fish in a boat but only \"El Pescador Grande\" can get them from the beach.

WOW great pic! What fun.....Skeet tells of getting these guys from the beach below Loreto, like the man said "nothing like warm water and sand between your toes while hooked up with your favorite fish"

Congrats fella great catch.

Pompano - 1-7-2015 at 09:09 AM

Hoo-boy, that sure looks like a great old time, amigo. I love fishing in any way, and have to say catching fish from the shore rates right up there...especially from Baja's warm sandy beaches.

It was a while ago that we caught many dorado (and other species) from the concrete pier at Escondido south of Loreto. I remember spin-casting a crocodile while standing next to local youngsters using the treble hook and line-round-the-can method. They'd accurately zip it out just past a target and rip it back..snagging a dorado every now and then. They were having a ball...and so was I.

Another favorite shore spot was at the old El Patron Palapa bar out by the Mulege lighthouse. What could be better?...casting to the small dorado splashing and feeding in the weed beds out front, giving a couple to the cook, but releasing most, then kicking back with a cold one. Baja at it's finest.

I watched them catching roosterfish there in the same manner. Big, really big, schools of sardinas would come into that cove and park themselves next to the pier. Alex caught his first dorado from my tin boat close to that pier. I'm not sure they let you fish from that pier any longer.

David K - 1-7-2015 at 09:25 AM

Saw a yellowtail caught from that pier in 1973. Salt from Isla Carmen used to be off loaded there. A ferry pier was built next to it for a Topolobampo connection. It never materialized.

wsdunc - 1-7-2015 at 03:40 PM

Bravo! Big fish from the beach are awesome.

Hi Rob... if your post has any words with an accent mark, n with a tilde (snake) over it, or a degree symbol, none of the text will post.

This is a temp issue Doug will fix with the new Nomad software of the past month.

Also words with the letters c u l o together covert to 'burro' as in ridiculous (for example). There are others too.

Hi Dave having a problem getting a pic from browse to the posting, browse is new to me?
Rob

David K - 1-7-2015 at 05:37 PM

Oh, that nightmare! LOL

Browse (attach files) has size limitations. I suggest you just do it the way most Nomads do, and post the IMG links from a remote photo hosting and free web site, such as Photobucket.com. There are 6 easy steps to set it up with the correct size to not distort the page by being wider than the Nomad limit of 800 pixels.

It is explained in the first post on the Nomad Baja Photo Gallery forum here... http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=65085

As always, I am happy to help!

hombre66 - 1-9-2015 at 10:26 PM

I would hate to lose a mag darter @ $15 to $20 bones a copy. Are any of you fisherpeople feeling generous enough to tell me if the minnows or jerkbaits by the same company are possibly as effective? The latter only run about $9 a copy. They all look to be of superior quality, even over Rapala. I will be fishing the central coast from the beaches in Feb.

Tod - 1-10-2015 at 08:49 AM

Terribly expensive. I have a handful purchased years ago. I have gone swimming several times over the years to retrieve them. Jensen's makes a similar one bit not sure hoe it casts. Super strike lures makes a larger model for same$. I think SP minnow has similar action. Maybe use standby Crocidile lure fished slow. I have fallen for that again.

David K - 1-10-2015 at 08:51 AM

Great job with Photobucket baitcast! Thanks for trying and sharing the photos.

hombre66 - 1-10-2015 at 10:01 AM

Thanks Tod. When in doubt, whup out the Croc's. Tempting though, to purchase at least 1 Mag Darter. My gut tells me that this one really will hook more fish than fisherman. Gonna re tie and check for abrasion on a religious basis.

Skipjack Joe - 1-10-2015 at 10:10 AM

The chance of losing lures when fishing over a soft bottom is really quite small, especially if you're catching nothing but surf fish.

Here are some fish which have cut me off when fishing from shore, though: needlefish, ladyfish, sierra.

Tod - 1-10-2015 at 02:01 PM

I use 14lb test line so it happens if I get lazy and don't check for frayed line. Higher test would make it safer. Friends of mine use 25~30. I always use wire leader due to
Sierra, pargo, needlefish.

Pompano - 1-11-2015 at 08:38 AM

Shoreline fishing is great fun. I fish a lot from a boat, but I often just run onto some beach to beachcomb and look for something fishy...like a rocky point, outcroppings, or underwater rockpiles. I like to experiment ... and this day I had some success with a shoreline outfit I use for pike and walleye Up North. I used a fast 5:1 baitcast reel, light action rod, 14 lb test line...and a 1 oz. white marabou jig. Seems like I could cast that heavy jig a mile! This beach was near Pta. Teresa about 15 mile south of Pt. Conception near Mulege. FUN TIMES! while you dig your toes in the sand.

This was Co-Pilot & me at Lake Sakakawea in western ND.

Great pics and advice from all. Checked my Baja tackle box today, pre trip, for the first time in a couple of years. (Where'd all my crocs and candy bars go?) Expecting a little sticker shock at the Cabelas checkout line.

David K - 1-12-2015 at 10:04 AM

Beach/ surf fishing was one of the big draws to Baja for my parents... When we discovered that the same corbina we caught in Del Mar/ San Diego also lived near San Felipe... Nuevo Mazatlan (Agua de Chale) became a destination fish camp... We would drive the Jeep just over a mile north on the beach from there to a big, sandy bay (we called it 'the lagoon' as it emptied at low tide) and fished on the point creating the bay. In a few years, the bay would become a vacation home campo with the name 'Bahia Santa Maria'.

1966-1968:

My mother with a typical double hookup of corbina. We brought mussel collected from the docks in Mission Bay for bait, and the corbina went crazy for it.

I had a similar experience with yellows crashing on the beach before as well...I was standing in the water in about 6"-8" of water and I had big yellows chasing bait right at my feet! I look back at that and it would have been fun to try to catch one by hand! Instead, I just did an underhand lob of a cast all of about 15' and hooked up instantly....almost spooled me!

Anyone ever try a cedar plug for surf fishing Dorado?

Interesting idea. For myself, I've never tried one...but I think the effort to give the plug enough action to entice a strike would wear me out quickly and I'd end up sitting on a chair and drinking cold Pacificos....which happens anyway.

Russ - 1-28-2015 at 03:03 PM

I have one I shortened the leader on and use to throw it a few times almost every time out off the "Flat Rocks" at San Marcos Tierra. Never had a strike.

My friend Roger has caught several surf fishing with a cedar plug but no pictures. He cought this 50 pounder trolling with a cedar plug though.
