MCCO .... It's usually in March ... is the date set for 2015?
BTW, is Scotty's El Candil renamed, serving same fare, open same times generally?

I don't know anything about El Candil, but the Chili Cook Off and Pig Races are usually run by the Rotary in Mulege, so contact one of those members.

Always a great time. The Pig Races can be a real hoot when they jump the track!

PIG RACE SAGA:
I and an OG named Dick Skamser (a fellow beach camper and Rotarian from WA. State) entered as pig race contestants in the 1996 Derby held back then at
the Serenidad. The pigs were a bit larger than the little guys they use now, but the rules and track were all the same; you can do anything to get
the pig down the track BUT touch it.
Our guy was makin' bacon and doing just fine with Dick and I (I was mid-40's, Dick early 60'ss) chasing along behind. About 2/3rds of the length of
the track, Mr. Pigley decides he doesn't want to go that way any more, he wants to go back to the start, and when a pig decides what they wanna do,
that's what they're gonna do. He turned around and headed right between Skamser's legs, tether and all! Dick went down in a heap, tangled in the
rigging, the pig was squealing, Dick was cursing and I was yelling at the pig. I gave it a solid WHACK! on the hinie, and ZOOM! back up the track
the porker went, and was first across the finish. The judges however disqualified us for touching the pig, but I protested that ''HE ATTACKED US
FIRST !!"....alas, to no avail. It was an hilarious scene, much laughter and dust/dirt everywhere. Ah, memories. I also have (what's left) of a
Chili Cook-off T-shirt from '96... a religious relic now, very hole-y. We entered that too, and won 3rd place costume prize.
BTW, that was held in April back then; the bobos were thick and nasty, and that's when a cook in the Serenidad kitchen turned me on to clear Vanilla
extract for putting around the ears and eyes, and I've sworn by it ever since. So, here's to the good-old days, because TODAY IS the good old days!

sure hope the folks at El Candil can keep it going!
we have only made it to the chili cookoff once but the chili that won that year was truly delicious.

Today we met with the two new owners of Scotty's restaurant and after wolfing down one of those wonderful French Dip Sandwiches, we put together a
calendar to do live Music there every other Friday night. So the first Friday will be Friday the 16th, starting at 5 pm. I think the guys are doing
a great job and while I truly miss Scotty, I am certainly supportive of their effort and commitment to providing a great meal at a good price. So
mark your calendars and head out to El Candil on the 16th.
