Of the 48 California Missions (27 in Baja, 21 in Alta), the exact day they were founded is well documented for most, however there are a few mysteries
that I would like to answer. I find in doing these history exercises 'out loud' with my friends here helps me have some progress!
Important California Mission Facts:
The first mission (Loreto) was founded on Oct. 25, 1697.
The 17th and last Jesuit mission (Calamajue/ Santa Maria) was founded on Oct. 16, 1766, and moved 7 months later to Santa Maria.
The first Franciscan mission (San Fernando) was founded on May 14, 1769.
The first Dominican mission (El Rosario) was founded on July 24, 1774.
Last mission founded under Spanish control: San Rafael on Dec. 14, 1817.
The last mission (Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe) was founded on June 25, 1834.
(Last Spanish mission founded in Baja California was Santa Catalina, Nov. 12, 1797).
Mexican California missions: Descanso, Sonoma, Guadalupe.
The missions without full founding dates are:
*San Juan Bautista de Ligui: Nov.__ 1705
*Santa Rosalia de Mulege: Nov.__ 1705
*San Jose de Comondu: ('Early') __ __1708
*Santiago: __ __ 1724
*Santa Rosa: Aug.__1733
*El Descano: 1810/1830?? It really was not a mission at first, but a different location name, during the Spanish period. El Descanso was new site for
flooded San Miguel, a mission that was moved in late 1809 or 1810 by Padre Tomas de Ahumada.
In 1830, San Miguel's Padre Felix Caballero called the Descanso site a mission when he built a new church that year. Historians and authors generally
include it as a mission, but die-hard academic scholars insist it was not a true mission.
Thank you for any help and your time, looking back in time!

In case there are any new Nomads who have a love for old things and historic data, I am still seeking the full dates for the founding of the above 6
missions. I have either missed finding them or they just no longer exist on paper!??
Thank you!
