Snow in the Sierra de Juarez, New Year's Day 2015

Maderita - 1-7-2015 at 01:39 AM

A cold winter storm brought snow to the Sierra de Juarez on New Year's eve day. The weather cleared on New Year's Day to reveal 2" at La Rumorosa. Driving south toward Laguna Hanson/Parque Nacional there was 8" of fluffy snow above the 5,000' elevation.

We made an early morning border crossing at Tecate in hopes of an adventurous drive on the nearly untracked snow covering the 25 miles of dirt roads to Rancho el Topo. Just for fun, I kept the 4x4 van in 2WD, with the rear ARB air locker engaged. Forward momentum wasn't a problem, though steering sometimes involved accelerating and decelerating with the throttle to make turns.

Temperatures Thursday night dipped to 13 F. (-10.6 C.) The watering troughs were frozen with ice 4" thick. The ice had to be chopped through so the horses could drink.

Great pics. I think I know where I'm going next time there are 100,000 people heading for Julian.

Thank you! Good to show Baja isn't all desert and all beach!

El Topo has had a warm place in my heart for more than 40 years. When a lady friend and I got separated from our chase vehicle in November while riding in jeans and tee shirts on our lightless motorcycles, we finally crept into the rancho in the middle of the night frozen to the bone and very grateful for the thread bare flannel sheet the long gone abuelita gave us. She had all her grandchildren with her, and it was the last piece of bedding. We shivvered all night in a ranch shack but she saved our butts! The Sierra Juarez is still one of my favorite places on the peninsula. Beautiful Pondorosas! Wonderful people.

This is Valley of the Moon on New Year's Day, in the southeast corner of San Diego County. The border runs right through the valley and is barely marked. We stepped into Mexico and back again just because we could :)

That's me in the white and a friend way up on top of the boulder pile.
