BajaNomad

why is this site so difficult to navigate???????

barniclebob - 1-13-2015 at 09:20 AM

Cant believe how difficult doing anything on this site can be!!!From adding a picture to my avatar to reading and answering an email. What gives???

David K - 1-13-2015 at 09:25 AM

Is your avatar picture within the size limits posted? A few people continue to post photos over the Nomad size of 800 pixels, after all!

In the first post on the Photo Gallery forum here I provide an easy 6 step method for posting photos (including an avatar).

Anyway, welcome to Baja Nomad... in the FAQ link at the top of the page is this answer:

How do I get my own picture (avatar) under my name?

Again in your profile there is a place for an 'Avatar' and avatar is the image under your name. Check with your Admin about the size of your avatar, it's usually considered common courtesy to use one under 150 pixels wide.

6 step....easy...haha. You are right Bob, easy is just referencing the photo in one step. . I thought they were supposed to upgrade the software to allow direct posting of photos. do not know what happened.

I love this site but have to agree with navigation issues. Sometimes I feel like a drunken driver trying to get home but keep missing it when posting something.

DENNIS - 1-13-2015 at 10:51 AM

Don't you need 25 posts before you can put up an avatar?

BajaBlanca - 1-13-2015 at 11:02 AM

Bob! I think it took me two years to get the photo loading down hahaha

Now I make up for it by posting lots of pics.

It used to be much easier when I had an automatic picture resizing gadget on my computer. Never could find that freebie again. My big loss.

Once you get it down, it is simple ... Famous last words.

I just tried to post a long ferry report and it would not take my cut and pasted report.

For the most part I really enjoy this board even with all the unhappy knuckleheads that post their poison, just looking for a fight.

It is very tiresome the hoops we have to jump through but I guess as they say, you get what you pay for.

Bingo!

Thanks to Doug for as much effort as he does here between work and family obligations!

David, I just sent you a "U2U".

What is the issue with cutting and pasting from Word? Is it still not allowing that?

What if you use Word to create a .txt or .rtf or something beside a .doc? Does it make any difference?

Doug posted this:

If you're copying/pasting something from Word, suggest you use a text-editor instead.

Also - if there are any characters with accents or tildes (~), that won't work at the present time.

Expected short-term issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Personally I would not like for this site to have auto image loading. In order to save storage space sites like that compress your image and greatly degrade it's quality. Being able to display your image as it is on a different server allows you to display it as it was intended.

On other sites I read, attached photos are made into clickable thumb nail images, just click and they get big for viewing. All of these sites do have the ability for you to hot link the full size image from a photo hosting site (like Photobucket, Picasa, etc.)... that way 0 storage is used from the forum and your photo is full size for viewing. Do respect the sites by not stretching them with over-sized images, so set your image upload sizer to 800 pixels or 640 pixels.

I hate to say it but it looks to me like this site is on life support with glitchy out of date software and fewer posters all the time it is just a matter of time before it turns into a ghost town here.

Maybe Doug's getting tired of it all and contemplating a shift to Facebook. Stranger things have happened.

no pain...no gain:biggrin:

good thing I love a challenge...I think this site is kinda like living in Mexico...it aint easy and you need to exercise, patience, respect and kindness but in the end, it's the best game in town!

I haven't been on this site very long but I think it is awesome. Lots to learn here for sure.

Gas and diesel over 4.00/gallon will do it faster than any software issues. Especially if it stays at half that price in the US.

Maybe you should take over and run it yourself. Everyone has complaints, nobody usually comes up with constructive answers. Will you be the first ghost?

Providing a link is not the same as providing an image. Far from it. The presentation just doesn't flow if you provide links and there is far less interest from readers. Facebook will provide a low quality image of a linked image but most other sites do not.

The forums that create thumbnails from your upload and allow you click on those for a separate image degrade your image. Any time your image is resized from it's original there is degradation. Many of us process our image for a certain size and want it displayed as it was created. That's how a photo gallery should be.

The new limit of 250KB is very liberal and capable of displaying a find quality image at 800 pixels. As long as the image is within those parameters I don't think the original should be tampered with.

Facebook and other auto load websites gives you the convenience of uploading any size image out of the camera and have it resized to a uniform size. Just give it to them and they do the rest.
