BEWARE OF HUGE POTHOLE NORTH OF LORETO

One of our longtime Canadian tenants just came back from a trip south and he says there is a VERY DANGEROUS pothole, in an arroyo full of water (so you cant see the pothole) about 71 kilometers NORTH of Loreto.

It punctured two tires as he came upon it unaware heading south. Took him hours to fix and hitch rides with 2 tires but he did it.

He saw a motorhome that went completely off the road after hitting the arroyo.

And of course watch out for the pot hole (actually a cave in) on the edge of the Northbound lane a mile South of Mulege. It's well marked with a cone but it does force you into the Southbound lanes in anything larger than a sedan. It is about three feet in diameter and a person can stand in it with only his head showing. If you hit it, you will be deflected off the road and down a 75 foot precipitous drop.

It has been untouched since Odile most likely as it will take some major dirt moving to deal with it. Probably it would be easier to cut away the mountain on the other side and move the road over six feet.

God put it there to test A$$trac. I heard it some where so it must be true. What we really need is a picture of a pothole from 2001.

For the rest of us. thanks for the heads up.

The roads have deteriorated. pot holes around Catavina, especially south. Potholes on the road out to La Bocana and Abreojos. Mostly just tire eaters...but getting worse.

ohhhh don't get me started on the potholes into abre and la bocana - they sneak up on you and suddently WHAM

I wish we could remember the exact km marker - we think it is 56.

If La Bocana property owner started paying property tax maybe we could get them fixed.

Just a dig, Blanca. For everyone else. Abreojos is an incorporated town and must pay property tax. La Bocana is not and I guess unincorporated areas do not pay property taxes. go figure ut another reason to buy in La Bocana.

Sounds like the pothole under the water crossing has gotten a LOT worse.

Not sure of the kilometer marker.

The arroyo is located a few hundred yards north of the turnoff to Bahia San Nicolas. There is a small palm grove on the west side of the highway that comes right up to the roadway.

Odile filled in the arroyo downstream of the roadway deep enough to back up standing water across the roadway. The water is only a few inches deep but there now is a deep hole in the roadbed that is hidden by the water.

The water is clearly visible from both directions. Just SLOW DOWN and you'll be fine.

In this case less government might mean more potholes and less local say in how money is spent. No one said it was Blanca's fault...and I plugged buying property in La Bocana...Just an interesting side note on taxes in Mexico, DK. Get a grip.

You like getting into other people's personal lives yet we know nothing much of yours... You won't even show a photo of what you look like. It isn't Blanca's fault that La Bocana hasn't incorporated. Maybe that is a place that believes less government is best government?

hi there amiguitos - I know, Ralph....it is just amazing to me that we don't pay taxes and that we aren't incorporated. we do pay taxes on Les's properties in Abre. and it IS another good reason to buy here lol

That being said - we have pretty much decided NOT to see the B&B since I have contracted with the high school to teach until May and then again next school year. No moving, La Paz seems out of control.

Oddly we did not encounter said pothole on our drive down on Thursday. It looks like there has been a lot of patch work done on the road recently. Maybe they got that one taken care of?

The road is generally in very good shape from Vizcaino to La Paz. The exception is a 10-15 mile detour section just north of La Paz and the usual deterioration in Santa Rosalia.

It's gone.

The water has stopped flowing across the road and there is a large patch (10 ft x 20 ft) where the pothole used to be.

I made a round trip from Mulege to Loreto before it was fixed. Like last weekend. It was still underwater but as long as you slowed to a walk and took the Northbound lane (the visibly shallower side) it was no problem. You could push a wheelchair through.

You can see it for a quarter of a mile in both directions.

The truckers were easing through it at a walk.

If people drive fast they get in trouble. Period. And driving through standing water at more than a walking speed is just dumb.

The cave in just South of Mulege has been filled with dirt. We'll see how long it stands up to traffic.

All kinds of stuff has been happening here lately. There's an election coming soon for mayor and a guy has been pushing stuff through and I'll bet he runs for the office.
