The 2nd Census was done on Jan 19th and reports 644 Adults & 392 calves for a total of 1,036 whales in Ojo de Liebre at the moment.
Last year on Jan.20, there were 600 adults & 426 calves for a total of 1025 so the numbers are similar to last year with a few less calves born.
One very interesting note is that this year there are over a hundred whales in the Guerrero Negro lagoon which hasnt had whales for many many years as
the entrance is very shallow. Most likely the hurricanes in the summer changed the profile of the bar there and made it deeper so the whales can once
again enter there. You can probably see them from shore easily when you drive out to El Faro...the lighthouse...turn right just past the Banamex at
the end of Guerrero Negro. The road takes you through beautiful wetlands full of birds and is awesome at sunset!
Also, I am guiding a trip on Jan.30 that we had a cancellation so anyone wanting to join us for that trip is welcome along! I am really hoping to spot
Cola Loca...I just read a report that a calf had beached a few days ago but a team of rescuers got it back in the water and it sure looks like her. I
wonder if she keeps getting separated from her mom or if her mom is ditching her on purpose?
