Huell Howser and San Ignacio

Just watching the old episode where Huell flew into San Ignacio Lagoon, went whale watching and then went into town.

It really is a fun one to watch and if one has not been to San Ignacio, it does give one some of the feel of that beautiful town.

It was filmed before any of the road to the lagoon was paved and when Hector's vineyard and gardens right in town were still beautiful.

Huell is always a bit hokey, but he is having a great time.

Huell was always a little overbearing...not the hippest guy in the band, but his enthusiasm helped him tread water

The hippest guy in the band always did the most drugs and was a total burn out by 30... Huell was the kid who sat at the front of the class and raised his hand when the teacher asked a question and got the rest of us off the hook because we were daydreaming in the back and had NO idea what she had just said.

He was a knucklehead and I mean that in the kindest and greatest sense of the term...I miss him.

It seems we agree that Huell was a goober, but a lovable one!
What a dream job he created for himself, traveling California and other spots with a camera and an expense account.
California's Gold did not air in Anchorage, but my dad would never miss a show when I spent time with him in northern CA.
If I got this right, I think Huell said once that his name was a contraction of both parents names, Hugh, and Jewel.

For me it was the subject matter------always Amazzzzzing!!!!

Watched all the shows I could, and we laughed at Huell's antics while shaking our heads, just so we could learn more about our favorite State, California.

He was one-of-a-kind, for sure, and filled a niche. :biggrin:

What Huell did was take us to places we had either never seen or did and would want to see again. The cornball, casual method and Huckleberry Hound accent just made it relaxing and fun. He made everyone he interviewed a star on his show.

Amo Pescar was who first told me about Huell, over a dozen years ago. I never heard of him before, but became a fan since he and I both like to show historic sites. We hoped to get him and his cameraman to come down to Baja in our tour van to do shows on the original California, and the first California missions...

Max Kurillo, my co-author, was on a couple of Huell's shows and one was a rare one hour show with Max and Huell on the El Camino Real and its roadside bells. Max said Huell was supper cool to work with. He did all the work producing the show on the road... Just Huell and his one cameraman. Max also wanted Huell to include the missions in Baja, but Max said Huell was highly concerned over safety issues and legality using his cameraman in Mexico. The San Ignacio Lagoon whale special was an exception to his Mexico travel issue and Huell felt safe flying into and out of Baja. I am not sure who did the camera work in his Whale Tales video.

I once referred to Huell as the Lawrence Welk of Travel Guides, fun, simple and never very complex. :yes:

Except Huell showed a lot more emotion!

We had the pleasure of meeting him at an adult literacy awards program and he really was a genuinely friendly and sincere person. And he was very supportive of the literacy programs --- a good thing.

We just really enjoyed seeing him in one of our very favorite Baja places. San Ignacio and the lagoon are tops on our list for special places. Some of his questions and comments had a bit of the cringe factor, but it was fun to watch.

I enjoyed his tv shows and learned allot from them. I never met him but have a friend who knew him well and called Huell a true friend, and said he was a stand up guy. Since we're describing his personality, I found it interesting to know Huell was gay. That didn't mean anything to me other than understanding a little more about the guy.
