Whales arrive in Puerto Lopez Mateos

bill erhardt - 1-26-2015 at 06:20 PM

Last week the pangueros in the whale watching coop in Lopez Mateos estimated there were about 30 whales in the estero. I went out with friends a week ago yesterday and we saw a few, but they were generally antisocial and I got no photos worth keeping. Went back today and found the estero teeming with whales including mommas that wanted to introduce their babies. There were a few pangas out with clients and a National Geographic ship on the scene, and more than enough whales to go around.

Here are some pics.

Awesome photos! Thank you for sharing these.

We will be down in Scammons in a couple of weeks...can't wait!

It is always better in a boat that is not crowded so you can move around.

Beautiful smiles on the people and the whales, and really great photos ---

We really enjoyed our whale trip at that bay a number of years ago. A truly beautiful place

great news! I figured there must be more now from the number that have been passing by Asuncion in the last couple weeks. That mom sure has a scarred up nose and baby already has lice in her dimples...thanks so much for the report and photos!

Wonderful photos!

Thanks for sharing the trip. What a great experience for the couple in the boat. Enjoyed seeing their interactions with mom and baby.

Thanks for the report and great photos Bill. Did you see any signs with the dates for the Lopez Mateos whale festival? We usually like to go after the festival but if many of the babies are already big enough to be allowed visiting privileges by protective Mom's, it might be too late to wait until mid-March this year.

I'm backing living in San Nicolas, so no more info from me on the schedule of events, etc for the Grey Whale Festival 2015 in Lopez Mateos. Sorry.
