I am new here and sorry for the strange title. I am hoping to know how residents of Baja (in this case Baja Sur) react if possible cartel related
criminals are living in the next door.
A good friend of mine has a simple property in somewhere suburb of La Paz and I have stayed in the place a few times. I was getting ready to visit
the place again this spring. Even for not-so-experienced Baja traveler, I felt the area was safe and it was a rural feel, it's a residential area
mainly occupied by locals (Mexican).
My friend wrote me and informed me that there was a police activity back of his property and arrest was made. Apparently, one or more people living
in a shack was charged for drug and possible murder, and they are cartel related individuals.
I am shocked and am very worried to visit the place now. Although these criminals are in jail, who know when they return. . . but another part of me
wants to think that as long as we don't cross path or associate with these people, I am OK. . . is this crazy?
There are other normal families living next to and surrounding this "shack" and the arrest is know in the area, so I am guessing local Mexicans are
going on with their day-to-day living. Or are they also afraid but just cannot move out?
My friend is concerned but so far as these criminals are in jail (supposedly) he seems to be OK but he was kind enough to let me know what's going on.
I live in the States and I do know a few individuals that were arrested or charged with some minor drug activities, but any mention of cartel in
Mexico scares me. . .

Figure it out for yourself. There is nothing you can do about a neighbor who is involved in nonsense. They will likely not bother you ever. The
arrests are often distraction as well. Be a nice person, a good neighbor and ignore neighbors. Sweetwater - 1-30-2015 at 04:02 PM

I think the OP has a valid question which isn't addressed. In my neighborhood, we talk to each other about the neighborhood. I'd suggest that you
develop that type of relationship in your neighborhood, particularly with a well known, public event if you're going to be there for any length of
time. If I had a house and this occurred on my property line, I'd get reinforcements in the neighborhood to help me out. Same time as I'd be helping
them out.....maybe I grew up and lived in strange neighborhoods?
