Gray Fox in the Baja.. San Jose

CaboSur - 3-19-2015 at 07:50 PM

What a beautiful animal. Saw this fox during my afternoon walk. It was only about 20 feet away. Quality of the photo is not very good due to the fact i only had my cell phone! I've been back to the same spot several times with my camera but no luck yet..

What a nice catch. We have seen a variety of four legged creatures in The Baja but never a fox.

looks strikingly similar to the Channel Island Fox, San Nicolas Island 2012.

Cell phone.... quality..... I think it is spec-friggin-tacular! What a precious moment captured by technology we didn't have ... what... 5 years ago? Great pic! You sKientists out there, what breed of grey is it? The red colors and blunt body looks somewhat different to me from what's left of my memory. Dang, what a great shot, and 20'!

Those are the moments I've lived for in all travels; congrats on a #1 shot.

Your memory is the real deal. The photo just makes it a bit easier to share with the rest of us.

Thanks for posting.

There are quite a few in this area, but the coyotes may be diminishing their numbers.
A few years back, there was one in a tree above my head in la Joya Bch camp, waiting for a safe moment to come down and split.

Woody, you may be right, the markings are very similiar to the photo you posted. In all my years outdoors i've only seen one fox a long distance away. I just happened to walk upon him in a small arroyo on Cerro Chivo, the hill above San Jose. Took several pictures of him but this was the best. Its amazing he didn't run. I just slowly backed away hoping some day i will find him again in the same area

It worries me that he let you get so close. That usually indicates that the fox is not well. Rabies maybe.
Did you see him move? Was he slow?

AKgringo - 3-20-2015 at 08:17 AM

I saw several of them on my last trip in Oct, Nov! Maybe the last couple of seasons with storm cycles has bumped their food source, and therefore their population.
I would never let one get very close to me. The foxes up north can carry rabies without displaying symptoms, I bet their southern cousins do too!

Nice pic!

Foxes make great subjects for the camera. Loved the grey fox episode, CaboSur, and would like to add to it with these youngsters I came across playing on a hay bale. These are the more common red fox found Up North.

We were about 20 yards from them and tried not to disturb their play day. They gave us quite a show...I guess they liked the warmer bales.

This red fox is of a more cautionary nature. I came across him while walking the trail and was very leery of his nonchalant mood at seeing a human so close. This is certainly not the usual behavior of a wild fox, which should never be mistaken for a suburban type. A possible indication of rabies or other malady. He finally loped off to give us the trail.

I guess it depends on the fox. hiking on santa cruz island the house cat sized island fox shows absolutely no fear of humans and will readily walk right up to you! unfortunately the golden eagles are there to take advantage:( but still they're making a remarkable comeback.
the only fox i've seen down here was in Erendira, a handsome devil he was!

I agree with Willard those Foxes had no fear of people. In fact it was a rule on the island that you were supposed to drive no more than 15 miles an hour because the dumb Foxes Would just come trotting across the road not caring about anything except where they were going and you were supposed to be able to stop in time to avoid them.

What's the thing about rabies? Currently I'm healthy as a moose I survived a rabies scare and an Ebola outbreak! But I did catch a five day cold this winter two of those nights were spent with Alice in Wonderland dreams so there's that.
