Small sailboats down Cortez?

micah202 - 3-24-2015 at 02:31 AM

...anyone know of any threads or other places that document small beachboats sailing down the baja coast?

I have a friend who sailed a 14' Hobie Cat from San Felipe to Cabo 3 times. He preferred the 14' because he could right it by himself. Flipped it once at night in strong Elefantes off Bahia Los Angeles running bare pole.

Hobie, good effort, flipped with a bare pole. Saw a guy
rigging up at the San Felipe launch ramp at the harbor,
little retracable keel, trailered sailboat, going the length.
While not a sailboat, a kayak paddle from San Felipe to the
east cape, book by Ed Darrack 'Wind, Sun, Water' cronicles
the voyage

Those were the days....14' Hobie with a turbo jib, Tequila Sunrise mainsail, bucket harness....and yes, I could easily pull it back over if I flipped it. It would only fly with me on board since I was 6'3" and 210 lb back in that day. More weight just dug in the lone pontoon a bit too much.

Thanks for that memory, nothing digital but there's a wall with a photo in another room....heading that way right now.....

He was packing a boat which was use on one leg of his trip.

you're right, he didn't have a sail......

what was I thinking?

I also thought of Marv and Aletha Patchen and another couple 'sailing' from San Felipe to Mulege in a pair of canoes lashed together... but no they used a small motor.

There's a story somewhere on the net of a guy running a panga from Long Beach CA to San Felipe and the mouth of the Colorado River.

The vagabundos del mar did it in dugout canoes with sails.

That was the late Carlos Fiesta (Chuck Chambers, died when his plane crashed in the water near Newport Beach returning from the Baja 1000). He was a friend to all Baja loving people. His site http://BajaExpo.com still has excellent information, years after Carlos died.

Here is his story and photos of the panga trip from L.A. to the Colorado Delta: http://www.bajaexpo.com/circumnavigation/adios.htm

There have been many such adventures over the years. It's very popular and I've met and run across a few of them. Always fun! Here's just one Nomad thread that details a few.
