Safe to return to San Quintin?

SlyOnce - 3-26-2015 at 07:31 AM

My girl has some time off and I have Monday plus Cesar Chavez day off (4 day weekend), I'd like to drive down and go fishing. She doesn't want to go, afraid of the farm labor protests.

Whats the status as of 3/26/15?

If still possible unrest, how about suggesting an alternative location?

Here's the latest headline on the 'negotiations' going down;

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/mexico-growers-offer-str...

It doesn't look good. A 6% raise offered is being considered an insult; the farm workers are making about $10 per DAY and those wages haven't changed in 10 years. A 6% raise would equal a whopping 60 cents a day more...... Boy Howdy, I'd be thrilled. NOT.

A good friend went through there two days ago, and felt the whole area seems to be a powder keg with a short fuse. I'd be looking for maybe another destination; travelling through there is probably relatively safe IF you're daylight and legal, but as a destination I have a feeling it isn't even close to over yet. Time will tell.

If you have a Facebook act, go to Talk Baja and you can get complete updates. Things are pretty calm right now with both sides still negotiating but so far there has been no resolution. I found that what was being reported in San Diego was not the same as what I was experiencing while being stuck there. Facebook was wonderful at keeping everyone up to date in real time.

I think anyone can look at Facebook, no registration needed.

Oh and last night this was added: SAN QUINTIN: The growers have now upped their offer to 10%, which was also rejected...

for up to date news on the strike as well as travel conditions go to Talk Baja. There are residents reporting conditions all the time...plus you do not have to wade through to much BS.

Be aware, the businesses catering to tourists, surfers, campers and fishermen will not give you the straight scoop if you ask. When we had a problem here in La Paz with tourists getting robbed a couple of weeks ago the local pangeros assured me that it was a private matter and no tourists were affected. This was a lie. In fact several tourists had their possessions taken at gunpoint. We have been traveling safely in Mexico, Central and South America for many years. We always avoid areas of political unrest, political rallies and parades, and any Latin bars. There are thousands of places to fish in California Norte. My advise is to find one.

status is "unresolved"

workers still on strike,... negotiation ongoing.

so,... political unrest is not yet restful,...
suggest you avoid until the labor strife is over

Yes on BDOutdoors a local guide is saying "all quiet come on down" but of course he has an economic incentive. My girl doesn't want to go. We can fish the Coronados here on my own boat.

I can see avoiding the area. I can see avoiding political unrest and political rallies.

But avoiding parades and latin bars? Never! I just totally enjoyed the Ensenada Mardi Gras / Carnival parade and frequent too many latin bars.

You're pressing your luck. A good friend was killed in a Mexican bar on the mainland over a simple misunderstanding exacerbated by alcohol. The last time I was in Hussongs a national broke a beer bottle on the table next to us and confronted a gringo he thought was looking at his squeeze. Belligerent drunks hang out in bars in every part of the world. Being confronted by one in a bar in LA is one thing. Being confronted by one in a different culture where the nuance of language is foreign is another.
