Some other whale threads made me think of an unusual trip I took once to Scammons. It was many, many years ago (BS, Before Shari) and it was a hard
long journey to get down there, the conditions back then were very rustic.
In my boat there was a hardy family from Eureka, California, a man, wife, two young boys and a baby. There was a long heated discussion with the boat
owner about the baby but finally he agreed to take it because there was simply no place on shore to leave it.
He was also upset because the wind was howling and the boat would be hard to steer and he was afraid of problems with the weather. Weather or no, off
we went and we were gifted by oh so many close and wonderful encounters. The woman with the baby leaned too far, a wave tipped the boat and she lost
her grip on the baby. It fell right atop both mother and calf, was sucked beneath the surface as they moved to avoid the hull.
Before anyone could make a move to rescue the babe, both huge whales reappeared with the baby caught between them, raised up a little as though to
offer the child --- we almost capsized as four people moved to grab the baby from the water. The baby was unharmed, the captain and all the rest of
us were stunned and shaken. We returned to shore where there was a silent celebration without a single grumble about cutting the excursion short.
The mother, before we left, told me the baby was Christened Jennifer Rosten Carver. We all gave each other our addresses and lo and behold some of us
shared the miracle together for several years using the mail. Elizabeth Carver told me they changed the baby's name to Tzaltlik. I looked that up.
It's a Inuit word meaning "Ugly Baby Whale".

If you get a chance rent the film Amarcord. There is a story teller in their village who comes up with some good ones. One of them involves an
encounter with a talking porpoise that says "mama" to him. It doesn't sound so funny in writing but they show the porpoise mouthing the words.
Another story involves a sheik with his harem. That evening they invite him up from their balcony for a night of debauchery.
