HWY 1 north of La Paz

vandenberg - 3-27-2015 at 06:26 PM

Drove this last November and the detours south of La Paz were long and horrendous.
Has anyone traveled this stretch recently and can give a report on current conditions?
Planning a trip for mid April, but likely will forget it unless road has improved.

Made a mistake in my original request. Meant north of La Paz.

I traveled that stretch a few weeks ago and didn't have any significant detours. The only construction on 1 that I recall was north of La Paz and that wasn't a problem.

No problems

Still working but no problems?? Any other road construction in Baja Sur? I hope to do some exploring after Semana Santa invasion. No construction between Cabo and La Paz: Smooth sailing. Thanks for info/opinions. Tio

hahaha the gringo perspective...

invader= a person or group that invades a country...

you and I are the invaders...

I'm having a bit of a problem reconciling the title of the thread with reality. The body of the post references South of La Paz.

That said, as my recent trips revealed, from La Paz South all the way to the Todos turnoff, there was no construction.

I was puzzled by the title of the thread too. There was a lot of construction and some really long horrendous detours north of La Paz until a few weeks ago.

It is a gazillion times better these days. Now there are 2 very short detours between about KM 39 north of La Paz and the checkpoint just outside of El Centenario.

Like I stated I meant the highway north of La Paz. Inm November the detours were long and very rough, hard on a sedan. The detour up to the last micro dish station before going down the hill to Centenario was long and very rough. Like to know if this has improved any.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Funny guys, Bob and Susan I used to camp north and south of the border on holidays but no more. Being nice doesn't seem to be easy for you. Easy. :(:D Tomas ps thanks for the road info Linda.

I went up to Conquista last week and there was only a short section of dirt road remaining to be paved. They were busy spreading asphalt on the last section, so I'm sure it's paved now. The new, wide shoulders are GREAT!

vandenberg - sorry! apologies, I think I just went right to the end of the thread and didn't see your edit.

The bottom line is that the road is much much better and changes day to day. The last time I went into La Paz (Wed. last week) the detours had changed between my morning trip into La Paz and the evening trip back home. They are working full steam now and as danaeb says it may well be finished by now - will report after next trip to La Paz.

The crazy thing is that we were thinking they must be widening the highway, but no, it is still a 2-lane, but with wide shoulders, which are nice - maybe they are for the cyclists who are determined to bicycle down highway 1??? :):):)

OK - here's the latest from today's trip to La Paz.

Going north on the highway - starting at the north end of El Centenario by the Pemex station and all the way out through the checkpoint and on to KM 30, the road is done (painted lane lines and all) - very spiffy 2-lane road with very wide shoulders.

The section from KM 30 to KM 35 has not been improved at all. This is the curvy steep hill section and it's the same old 2-lane. I have no idea if or when this part will be improved. So far there are no signs that anything is going to happen there anytime soon.

Between KM 35 and KM 39 there are still 2 short detours, and that stretch should be finished soon.

Bajalinda,
Thanks!! Will be in La Paz in 2 weeks.

Just drove this the other day.
No road construction south of La Paz towards Todos Santos or Barriles/San Jose del Cabo

North of La Paz there is some road construction for maybe 5 miles and its a nicely grated dirt road

cabo-ash - 7-25-2015 at 07:35 AM

Roadworks north of La Paz are now complete apart from paint - no more detours onto the dirt road.

Nice to know, even if there are no alternative routes.
