Old Baja ACSC Signs

56MM# - 4-8-2015 at 09:10 AM

Does anyone have any photos of old ACSC diamond signs that were at one time installed along the dirt highways of Baja? They looked just like the ones ACSC had north of the border for much of the 20th Century. Here's an example:

Here's one... from Dr. Penny's web page:

Neat

I found someone who can custom make these signs with favorite locations. Use an old map to get mileages. Was thinking:

<-----------
Rosario 361 km
224 mi
Ensenada 608 km
378 mi

Mulege 283 km
175 mi
La Paz 771 km
479 mi
------------>

Where would this sign be?

On the old road (mileages from Gerhard & Gulick, Lower California Guidebook):

378 miles from Ensenada was 3 miles south of Rancho Mezquital and 32 miles northbound from El Arco.

175 miles from Mulege would be at the road west to Miller's Landing and 57 miles northbound from El Arco.

Was attempting to come close to the mileages found on a sign at the turnoff to Guerrero Negro and guess at what the sign would say, if such a sign ever existed. Based on the Lower California Guidebook, what would the distances be?

Sure... as the old main road did not go to Guerrero Negro, I will figure it for you when I get home later. At the car wash now.

For the purposes of historical accuracy and because the old main road passed through El Arco, can you compute mileages from El Arco to the four places, via the old main road? Thinking such a sign would be a great piece.

Anybody with a flat bed UV printer can remake one.

EL ARCO TO (via the old main road 1950's and 60's):

Ensenada: 410 miles (661 kms.)
El Rosario: 254 miles (441 kms.)
Mulege: 166 miles (267 kms.)
La Paz: 478 miles (771 kms.)

Thanks David.

My pleasure 56mm#... If you ever make a sign, please show it to us!

I know a couple people who have them as collectibles from the old days, priceless if you are a Baja fanatic!

SWEET!:bounce::biggrin:

56MM# - 5-11-2015 at 11:46 AM

Jake Bear is the guy who made the sign. He already had the design. I just had to provide the towns and mileages. Thanks David K.

His email address is jake@aaroads.com or artistjake@gmail.com

Sign is made of thick steel, probably the same material as the originals.

Very cool. If I wanted to get one, how would I do it? Do you have a company name, or link to a site?

56MM# - 5-11-2015 at 03:13 PM

Send an email to Jake Bear at either jake@aaroads.com or artistjake@gmail.com. He knows and makes signs from both sides of the border and is very responsive to inquiries.

¡Gacias!

roundtuit - 5-11-2015 at 03:37 PM

I can put the bullet holes in them to make them realist for a small price
:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

A hunting season on signs would require a hunting license from the Mexican government. An obvious revenue stream they are missing out on. "There's one Martha". KABOOM

Bump for bajaguy!

Ateo - 5-27-2016 at 10:28 AM

Thanks for the bump. These signs are awesome.

woody with a view - 5-27-2016 at 10:42 AM

Maybe a group buy if he knows he'll have 20 to make would be cost effective individually.

Hola roundto it. I like your handle because i used to hang ot at a bar by that name on highway 301 in Maryland just before you crossed over the Potamic river into Virginia. Were you ever ther? The used hand out wooden nickles with every beverage bought and you could use them for your next one.

woody with a view - 5-28-2016 at 04:45 PM

Bob, I think every bar in the USofA used those round Tuit's.

MexicoTed - 5-29-2016 at 12:13 AM

Rancho Ojai in Tecate has one of those original, old signs in their office.

David K - 8-11-2018 at 01:49 PM

Bump for Terry.

Got it - Thanks!!

After the 50th NORRA Mexican 1000, I picked up these cool Auto Club-like commemorative signs. Yep, one is in my garage.

That's the year of the event, the other numbers are miles from the start in Ensenada.

AKgringo - 12-18-2019 at 12:58 PM

Those signs got that shot up, and rusted out in only two years?

David K - 12-18-2019 at 01:04 PM

If I recall, the aging was artificially added to the new signs.

That is correct, if you flip the signs over you see shiny, new metal.

advrider - 12-18-2019 at 08:59 PM

Really cool, I think they were for sale on Race desert at one time?
