Russ, I think that's a young scrub jay. They don't come into the village much -- they live in thick scrub desert.

Agree ^^ Young Scrub Jay was my first guess.

Around here ( San Diego ) they are mostly inland birds rarely seen on the coast.

I was thinking Scrub Jay also but the color /markings just didn't make it. Immature Scrub Jay makes sense.

It doesn't surprise me that they are seen near the coast in many parts of Baja. It's more likely they will still be living in areas that have good habitat and open space- more common SOB.

In most areas of Southern California the coastal areas are developed and Scrub Jays' preferred vegetation has been removed to make room for houses, shopping malls, parking lots etc. So they are still around- but often in fewer numbers.
