Gas prices dropping in Baja? (News report)

Whale-ista - 4-21-2015 at 05:52 PM

(Location information added 4/22: stations in Baja Sur may not be impacted)

"Several Pemex gas stations in Baja California have dropped their prices following the lead taken by two stations in Puebla two weeks ago. In Baja, prices were cut by 30 centavos, a rare occurrence in a country where gas prices used to go up every month, a practice that ended in December."

..."Grupo Eco is the owner of the 31 Baja California Pemex franchises that have reduced prices. It has stations in Tijuana, Mexicali, Tecate, Rosarito, Ensenada, Nogales, San Quintín and San Felipe.

"New energy legislation establishes a maximum price for gasoline this year and next, after which the market will be open to all comers and Pemex franchisees will have the option of switching to new suppliers in the marketplace.

"There is also a minimum price, that which the stations pay to Pemex Refining, below which they cannot go."

Yea, the free market over state control!

So the towns with multiple stations, like san q, may see price cuts, and towns with only one station, like el Rosario, may see price gouging. And the next fuel shortage will see gouging by all!

Yup, thank's goat for trying to hurt a good Nomad's business that so many here are trying to help now! If you actually traveled in Baja and did business with Antonio, you would know he is not at all the way you describe him.

It's 30 centavos......I can see gas guzzlers flying out of the showrooms on that news. It's just as well that this post is already circling the drain....

If it hadn't been for the " " (you fill in the blank) we might have gotten some actual data from someone. We could have had an informative post. but nooooo....

No matter, he thinks its his forum anyway...or so the people at the bar say.

And your two posts have added what to this thread?

Just to get back on topic, the article states that the Government still sets the maximum price, and there is also a minimum price, but stations are allowed to discount gas within that range.

Edit.....I think that wholesale would be a better term than minimum for the price setting. I suppose a station could sell at a loss if they chose to.

Added as much as yours, since we can all read (I think). Can you add anything to the price in Baja? Our prices have not dropped, but we are in Baja Sur.

bajatrailrider - 4-22-2015 at 01:32 PM

Anyone Getting Fuel in San Vicente, should think about going else where.Last three in charge where Jailed. There at it again, pumps rigged.Half the town goes there with 5 gal can,so they cant rip them off.Talk has it,the guy in office, can change pump amount form the office.

msteve1014 - 4-22-2015 at 01:36 PM

That is a good point. Not too important what the price per liter is if you don't get a liter.

vandenberg - 4-22-2015 at 01:58 PM

No price drops here in Loreto or La Paz. Stations with the "Cuali" signs still manage to put between 22 to 23 liters in a 19 liter can.:biggrin:

rts551 - 4-22-2015 at 02:26 PM

There is a facebook page "Gasolineras Ratas de Ensenada" that exposes stations in Ensenada. They use to have a web page but I can not find it.

mtgoat666 - 4-22-2015 at 03:57 PM

no one pours an honest liter!

stations will all drop their price, and recalibrate their pumps to pour shorter liter

:!:

Whale-ista - 4-22-2015 at 05:03 PM

Thanks for the feedback. I was curious if this report was accurate, re:price changes, so I posted the headline with a question mark.

I hoped to get some "ground truthing" from people who buy gas in the peninsula.
Are prices really changing?

(It wasn't meant to start a discussion with complaints/allegations of price gouging & overcharging- I see those often posted elsewhere.)

Sounds like changes to regulation doesn't have much impact on prices (so far, at least).

are the min and max prices public information? can someone post the min and max allowed by govt?

Ateo - 4-22-2015 at 05:46 PM

Franchisees will have the option to switch to new suppliers? I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Bajaboy - 4-22-2015 at 05:53 PM

It is what it is...I normally just put in 500 pesos and hope for the best. It's really not worth worrying too much about a short fill, the exchange rate, and the cost of gas. It's not like I'm not going to forego buying it:light:

bajabuddha - 4-22-2015 at 05:58 PM

Jayzus wept on the cross, NoMads. The article said prices dropped by CENTAVOS; 15 centavos = approx. ONE CENT. So, as stated above, a WHOLE WHOPPING NICKEL A GALLON from roughly $4?

Well, WHOOP-DEE-FRIGGIN'-DOO !!

If you want to actually DO something about it in your local town, go to your Pemex with a Liter measuring bottle (incremented), dress nicely, and have a clipboard with legal paper; measure out and buy one liter off the pump, write down the station #, the attendant's name (tag on shirt), and pump #, and drive away. They won't know you from Adam, but I guarantee word will spread like a grass fire.

Now quityab-tchin'.

rts551 - 4-22-2015 at 07:35 PM

Can not do that in my town. Attendant and I are Buds...in fact I guess no one is a stranger in this town.... but we did check the pump one day. Right on the money. Of course the coop owns the station. why would they cheat themselves.

Thats a good one,When you step on the property dressed like that.He controls the pump you use.Now thats a great Idea, dress like inspector. Then he will switch pump to correct amount. The way they got the last three owners. They removed fill hose from gas tank.Put small tank in trunk,to measure gas.Thats how they found out he controlled pump amount from office.;)
