My guess is from the metamorphic rocks at your feet and 'sign' point, the basalt encrusted ridges in the background with high peaks behind that, i'd have to guess it's up somewhere south of El Rosario looking north...... am I within 1000K ?

In the 2nd photo I think I have seen that flat top mountain in the upper left somewhere along highway #1, correct?

Basalt on plateaus, almost zero vegetation, can only be the vizcaino wastelands of central Baja.

David, you are very close! Family mountain is just a bit north and the table top mountain is to the north as well. It's called Elephant Mountain.

I am in Bahia Asuncion about two months out of the year. I run a lot and have explored a good deal of the surrounding areas. My normal run takes me north towards San Roque along the ocean. At the dry lake bed, I head into the hills and run along the ridgeline back to town.

Years ago, I started building a rock house on top of the first mountain. The views are epic there and I often find myself thinking about family members. I remember all the great summers I had with my grandparents at their place near the (former) Fox Studios. Or, I think about how grateful I am to my dad for taking me to Baja as a kid.

As the years have unfolded, a faint trail is now visible where I run. In addition, the rock house is gaining some height. I shared my special place with my family one day and my kids said we should we should name it "Family Mountain."

We made the sign and all hiked up to the top. I told my kids that when I am long gone, they can always come up to Family Mountain and I will be there to listen. I hope that they too will enjoy my trail.

Now with each run, I place a few rocks and remember a loved one. If you are ever in Bahia Asuncion and wish to visit Family Mountain, feel free to do so. All I ask is that you follow my tradition of placing a rock in memory of a loved one as well.

To find Family Mountain, drive towards San Roque. As you enter the dry lake bed the mountain will be on your left. It's easiest to climb on the seaward side. From the lake bed to the top is about .6 of a mile.

Thanks Zac... nice story! My kids know that for them, going to Shell Island will be how they can get close to my spirit after I leave.

yes David, that's it. The mesa in my pictures (Elephant Mountain) is to the left of the one you referenced. Elephant Mountain is a great reference point for exploring. There are some really cool roads that head into the mountains to the east of it and eventually end up on the Tortugas/Vizcaino road.

One side note, the mesa you noted has been picked clean of rocks for building. I'm guessing most structures in town have a rock or two from it.

Thanks for the share. Next time I'm there I will think of how the wall was started. I will also think of good friends and family that I can't share the view with.
