Punta Chivato/Mulege paddle board question

mooose29 - 4-28-2015 at 04:49 PM

So I will be down at our place on Shell beach next week. My buddy and I are planning on taking our stand up paddle boards and paddling to Mulege, if we follow the coast staying within a few hundred yards we are looking at a 12-13 mile paddle. We have experience and will have plenty of water and food in our packs along with gps and VHF radio.

What I was curious about is have any of the Nomads on this forum done this paddle before or know anyone that has I was trying to get my timing down. I am thinking 3-4 hours? We will not be paddling back north the girls will meet us at Serinidad and we will drive back. I am thinking we will leave early like 7 or 8 so we are on the water before it gets too warm or too windy.

Russ what has the wind and temp been like lately?

Water temps are still in the low 70's Pretty much can count on the wind picking up around 10am. I'd take a cell phone and or radio with me and I think 4 hours would be fast for conditions and distance. Check the wind forecast but count on wind after 10am regardless of the forecast.

Thanks Russ, the wind should primarily still be behind us to a little across correct?

I've traveled that route many times in a boat, but only once in a kayak with other paddlers. 4 of us went from the old hotel and followed the shore mostly. We were probably faster than you can paddle-board. I would depart as early as possible...predawn if you can. When the prevailing wind comes up, it most likely will be a tailwind and coming from over your left shoulder as you are paddling to Mulege. Just remember, nothing surprises you like a surprise. Be aware...and have a ball.
