beautiful Baja churches

güéribo - 5-1-2015 at 10:07 AM

A really nice photo thread going on ("It's just the desert") in the trip reports forum. Wondered if we could start another photo thread with our favorites. . . beautiful Baja churches.

This is the church at San Roque (north of Bahía Asunción).

Wonderful concept.

Here's Santa Rosalillita's entryway:

At San Ignacio next to the town square.

Pompano - 5-1-2015 at 10:33 AM

Here's one of my first visited ...and still a favorite part of Baja history.

The majestic church of San Ignacio de Loyola rises at the front of this very welcoming plaza.

We took a tour of the San Roque church, also, güéribo. Some history there about a fire, too. Here's some other views.

That's the last photo you'll see before all the modifications and rebuilding are finished.

David K - 5-1-2015 at 10:50 AM

I was surprised when Shari posted the rebuilding of that church the other day.

Here are photos I took in 2007 there...

Simple church, beautiful surroundings. Little church at the site of ex-misión de Guadalupe.

mtgoat666 - 5-1-2015 at 11:56 AM

Love this one. I was expecting either Clint Eastwood or The Duke riding a Palomino past the entrance.

Beautiful! I don't think it had this lovely landscaping last time I was there.

my favorite mission

Pompano - 5-2-2015 at 09:49 AM

Mulege Mission Church - Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé. The mission was founded in 1705 by the Jesuit missionary Juan Manuel de Basaldúa.

Some Baja-lovers and amigos from Italy decide to have their wedding at the mission.

Certain church ceremonies make me nervous...

David K - 5-2-2015 at 09:54 AM

Very cool Roger... CALIFORNIA'S 4th Spanish mission, 1705... the construction of the stone church was just finished a year before the Jesuits were ordered expelled!

Harald, nice one of the chapel at Comondú!

These are great...keep em coming

Ken Bondy - 5-2-2015 at 06:25 PM

Every time I see photos of beautiful structures like these I am saddened at all the incredible resources (time, money, talent) that are wasted on religion. I can't stop thinking about how much better the world would be if these massive resources had been devoted to real things that actually benefit people, like health, education, housing...instead of imaginary sky fairy worship. I am bracing for the responses, bring it on :).

I'd like to humbly ask that if folks would enjoy a discussion about religion, that it move over to the off topic forum, so this could remain a photo thread. Thanks for sharing these great pictures. Keep em coming.

And another of the Virgin of the Rocks. With recent enclosure.

My first photo was in 1975, soon after the artist completed his painting.

don't ask - don't tell?

religion, churches were powerful imperialists - why should we not talk about the pros and cons?

Without the (church commissioned) composer Palestrina we would not have modern music.

you really don't have to go so far back in time - are we using our resources today to benefit people, health, education, housing? Who are you kidding?

And by the way, religions (none of them) don't do any harm. They are all beautiful philosophies. It's the organizations (churches) and the humans running them who used them to get rich and suppress people. It's like the very rich today who sold you on the idea (religion?) of capitalism - it's benefitting them. Not you. Wake up!

güéribo - 5-3-2015 at 10:10 AM

No, not implying not to have the discussion. Just would like to see it moved to a different place as its own thread, so this thread can continue as a photo thread.

Yo tambien.....great architecture built on the backs of indigenous slaves....

Back to the pics...

4x4abc - 5-3-2015 at 10:17 AM

if you ever have a chance to track down the padre in San Ignacio, ask him to show you the roof of the mission. It is absolutely stunning!
Religion, churches or what have you - enchanting buildings created by humans are just that - enchanting! Bottom line is, WE did this. Be proud of your forefathers.

Right on! Sanitize it! Like TV. Just watch it. Don't think.

güéribo - 5-3-2015 at 10:20 AM

A worthy discussion, for sure. Looking at the beauty of these structures is also mixed with great sadness for me.

4x4, I loved the roof of San Ignacio. The gentleman with the juice garden took me up there. A must see.

who do you think built the Hoover Dam or the Eiffel Tower?
Definitely not fairly paid citizens. Underpaid Americans are just that - indigenous slaves.

I know, too controversial, too political. Needs to be moved to the "off topic" corner where nobody participates.

Why do you think the country is in trouble (not only ours)? Because nobody wants to talk about it.

San Ignacio. Love the building, hate the concept:

More meaningful & historical scenes from the mission at San Ignacio.

A work-a-day Catholic church in downtown Mulege that has accomplished great works over the years...like getting us to Mass after a very long absence.

for all you church experts - which church would you find this unique Guadalupe in?

David K - 5-5-2015 at 09:08 PM

Would it be San Luis Gonzaga? I have never been to that one, sadly!

How about a photo sphere of in the inside of the Misión Santa Rosalía de Mulegé.

Click and drag this bad boy to look around. Up, down, zoom in/out.

go ahead - do it!

Pompano - 5-8-2015 at 11:58 AM

Not Baja, but it IS a beautiful church & mission and is certainly interesting.

We came across it while on a RV road trip across the Pacific Northwest and while nearing Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Mission of the Sacred Heart or Cataldo Mission. Built 1850-53, Mission of the Sacred Heart is the oldest standing building in Idaho.

For a change, this mission was requested by the locals. In the early 19th century, the Coeur d'Alene Indians had heard of these powerful "medicine men" in black robes with a book and wanted some of these men for their own tribe. They sent men east to St. Louis, and in 1842 Father Pierre-Jean De Smet responded to the request and came to the area.

The building was constructed by the Indians themselves, so that they could feel part of the church. It was built using the wattle and daub method, and finished some three years later without using a single nail.

In 1961 it was designated a National Historic Landmark, and in 1966 it was put on the National Register of Historic Places.
