Vagabundo Travel Club new insurance company

Phil S - 5-4-2015 at 01:19 PM

Recently learned of V.d.M's new insurance company where the age 80 max is no longer a requirement to get the insurance. Can anyone say if they have had any experience with this new company? Other members have mentioned another Baja travel club for their auto insurance. Can anyone respond about their experiences so I can compare the two? (I have eight years background insurance agent experience)
Thanks to all that were able to respond.

Discover Baja Travel Club (in San Diego) and BajaBound.com (sponsor of this web site) both sell insurance from the same excellent Mexican company. The club requires membership, but offers discounted annual rates for the members. Baja Bound is just super easy on line purchasing, no membership needed, and they are active here on Nomad... and will answer your questions easily. I have had policies from both, no problems, always happy with the personal service from both!

I believe the question was about age restrictions. Not about which is good or better.

So, what is the new company??

"where the age 80 max is no longer a requirement"

I read this as a joke, as in Vags insures only old people and he was looking for a company that works for under 80 people...

May be a trend

Just got a message from my VISA card issuer that the Insurance Carrier for the automatic travel insurance (when using the card to pay for it) has changed. Same benefits though

While the San Diego Mex Ins brokers seem to insure MOST BN's,
me too, Vags was there at the beginning of extended Baja travel. Always has been difficult to get a reading on Mex Ins Co's
just not that many reports. Qualitas Mex Ins Co seems to generate a few negative reports, although some have been
satisfied with them. Just because a Mex Ins Co is not advertised
thru this site, doesn't disqualify them

I don't remember age 80 restrictions on policies sold by Bajabound. They are asking date of birth, and I tried now just for fun enter April 1935 and DL expiration next year, and it went smooth, asking further for VIN etc.

Like David K said, they all broker insurance from the same 2 or 3 Mex companies. So I don't see how the choice of broker makes any difference here.

Btw, has never been successful with buying anything through Discover Baja. When you get a quote, you must click on the policy that you like - and it says Become a Member and Buy - what the heck, maybe I don't want to become a member. Anyway, when I click, it says "session expired" even if the quote showed up just few seconds ago. Don't know if this has something to do with Firefox browser, - there are still few places that insist on using the dinosaur Explorer.

Hopefully I can clear this age thing up. My vag ins. company had an age limit of reach 80 and they will not (Mexican comp.) will not write your insurance coverage. So I called them & they said, "we have a new company that will write 80 & old (don't know how much older) I'm a 'young' 80, like so many Baja Lovers look. I don't take prescription drugs yet. (yeah I know. I'm blessed) And rip snortin' & ready to go!!!! Just need a company to "write it". So far, I'm surprised the Vag members who are also Baja Forum members haven't responded yet. What's my answer? I hope not, "fly down". Then I'll miss seeing all my Loreto & Nopolo friends. Hopefully some will respond yet. Sorry David for the confusion. And thanks to those who have responded.

Thanks Phil... it is sometimes hard to read things here the way they are said, or meant to be heard!

The bottom line is that any of these companies that you are dealing with are brokers. Any decisions about age restrictions are made by the individual carriers.

Hola Phil

Thanks Capt. I remember one time while driving around Baja for the winter, Vag's insurance co. cancelled them. And they had no way to contact me & tell me. There is a higher power, because he/she/it kept us safe that year. Hopefully someone will respond with an experience. As has been said many times in the past, "your insurance company is only as good as how they treat you during a claim."

I suspect that you are one of very few people with this kind of experience, so why don't we start from your experience. Cancelling coverage out of the blue is VERY unusual. Why did they do it?

Hook - 5-6-2015 at 11:07 PM

I'm not sure if it was the same time as me, but I was down in Mexico when the Vags had an insurance company go belly up on them. I believe it was Seguros Noroeste. I found out by calling the Vags about a claim and the Vag office told me about it. It had just happened and they said their Mex broker had a small back-up fund (believe it was Oscar Padilla, at the time) to cover SOME early claims. I was fortunate enough to get covered.

I think this was in the mid-late 90s.

chuckie - 5-7-2015 at 01:32 AM

Yes....It happened...I WAS contacted by Vagabundos and told not to worry, and after a bit of confusion had a new policy in hand fairly quickly....

Phil S - 5-8-2015 at 11:41 AM

Hook. That was about the time it occurred. Scares the heck out of me just thinking of the "what could have happened, if"!!!!!!!!!!!

Alm. Hook & chuckie pretty much answered your question. Thanks guys for the response. Over & out.
