Four of us in an '03 F250 (4WD, diesel, long bed, crew cab) left Vista on the 19th and arrived back on the 5th, covering 2200 miles. We fished three
days out of Las Arenas, two at Los Barilles, two at Loreto and a last day at San Quintin. Road was great. Weather was great; pangas at Arenas were
good, as well as the pangeros; cruiser at Barilles was nice/skipper was nice ( not very fishy); pangas at Loreto were excellent/less so with pangeros;
cruiser at SQ was great/skipper could well have been, but we got blown off the water as soon as we got out of the boca. Bait was Tough
everywhere...hard to make and equally hard to buy; fishing was great but catching was disappointing to say the least.
We are not the best fishermen in the world, but we have a collective 225 years on the So Cal/Baja water and our catch was:
Arenas:
one stripe (released); one 120# (est) YFT lost at gaff @4 hours; one 18# cabrilla; one 53# & one 35# amberjack; one 15# rooster and miscellaneous
needles, triggers, skipjack and toothed bonito.
Los Barilles:
four roosters (released) 60#, 55#, 50# and 35#...absolute highlight of the trip! one 30# amberjack and one 5# dodo.
Loreto:
Two 30# YT, two at 15#, one 35# amberjack, plus a few needles and triggers
San Quintin nada ( mucho viento)
A trip down Mex 1 is always to be appreciated and remembered and all four of us are looking forward to our next adventure. In the meantime, we can't
wait for the So Cal scene to heat up and do a replay of 2014.
