A friend called to ask me about taking his family from LA to a quincenera near the Marriott in TJ. They will stay at the hotel since it is five
minutes from the party.
Since he has never been across the border he wanted to know how to deal with crossing and driving etc.
I have not driven across the border since buying a small airplane 25 years ago. I am spoiled using it for Baja trips and commercial flights for
mainland trips.
Any thoughts on maybe parking on this side and hiring a driver or cab to get around TJ (there will be four of them). Is walking across the border
still busy and long lines?
He would appreciate any Nomad thoughts and advice.

its really busy where you are staying but a great part of tj
lots of food and entertainment
you should figure about 400 pesos a ride...
taxis are everywhere
get the cell number of your favorite driver and he'll come get you
it's worth the money for the taxis...lots of crazy drivers in tj

Actually, the cost of a cab will be offset by the fact that you did not buy Mexican insurance for your vehicle. No one who drives across the border

I do the dental thing in TJ and while it may be hang on tight time in a taxi, it is still better than driving around town, especially if you do not

I agree with Bob and Susan and Bajahowdd. It's much easier to let them do the driving, and even with insurance, you risk getting hit. I was always
afraid someone was going to hit me when I lived in TJ, but luckily, it never happened. I kept my driving to a minimum, which was driving across the
border and back home.

I live in Playas de TJ. I drive all over TJ but I don't suggest it for a first timer.
Keep this firmly in mind, negotiate price with the Taxi BEFORE getting in and leaving with them.
Most fares will be $3 to $5.
Get in, say (for example) "Ave Revo, $5 ?" you will get a yes.
There is no real need to tip the taxi guy but an extra $1 would be highly appreciated.

by the way, do visit Ave Revo, walk around, look for Pasaje Rodriguez, look for the café Praga, and walk in Centro between Constitution and Revo,
check out all the shops, you will really love it.

Hope I'm not to late with this info but most cab rides from the border to central places are less than 5 dollars and this has been like that for many
years now. The rates are published.
For your friends the rate would be like going to Hipodromo between 50 and 70 pesos and at 14.50 to one it would be between 3.44 and 4.82 dollars. That
is for the ride, not per person.

On the way back the wait to walk across was 3+ hours. We jumped in a van for $6 each and they took us through the bus lane. We got out and walked

No, they are not the vans that go on predetermined routes, these rates are for the taxi cabs at the border. Yes the yellow cabs or the only ones at
the border. They have had the rates posted for about 10 years now.

I did the bus thing a couple of times...its about 70 pesos each...
they put you in a van...and drive you close
a lot of money if you have a group
then... you get out of the van and get in line to cross...walking
i'd only do it again if it was raining
the long line in mexico moves very fast
its one line in mexico then turns to 20 lines in the usa
if the van isn't full yet...you wait...the walkers MAY beat you across
as for july 4th...that's an American holiday
bbq's and family at home
the border isn't that bad
I was amazed in the past...I was prepared for a long wait too
