Part 2: Desert Magazine Baja Pics: 1946

Here Walter Henderson and others travel across Laguna Salada in the August, 1946 issue! They were trying to find Palomar canyon, but couldn't find the trail so they went north to Cantu Palms.

Henderson drew the greatest maps!

This one says San Felipe: 53 mi./ Mexicali: 82 mi./ El Mayor: 35 mi. The old road was longer than today's Hwy. 5 (finished around 1954).

David, Do you have any history or knowledge of why the Southern California Auto Club did the early mapping and exploration of Baja?

The pics are GREAT! Keep coming.:bounce:

Pablo, take a look at the second and third post in this thread: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=7028

I am going to say that as a club, they wanted to present automotive adventures to their members. They made maps and guides to Baja for over 80 years and put up those historic diamond road signs all over the peninsula. I can remember them, even.

Wow! I did not know the guides went that far back (1927). Thanks again DK

David, really like the old maps of San Felipe area. I noticed one of them shows the Sierra Pinta along the road going down there. On the way back from the Matomi run last February I stopped and shot this photo of the Sierra Pinta landscape... a beautiful area indeed.
