Your typical ground squirrel is very cute ....

..and is also a Master of the sneak attack! Run, girl! Run!

p.s. This for humor, naturally. We grew up living with nature and know better than to 'feed the animals'. Well, most of our generation knew that of course, but today it requires some 'reconfirmation'.

In the Sierra Nevada range, they are prone to fleas that may carry bubonic plague and other diseases. Pretty rare, but it happens!

Edit; I suppose it is the Golden Mantle ground squirrel that is the carrier, but I don't want to play with any of them!

Through the years guiding back-country, it was a constant condition to try to convince the tourist-guests not to feed the ''cute little animals'' who came begging at the campsites, and then dealing with the calamities from those who had. One such place was Jones' Hole Camps (1 through 5) on the Green River in Dinosaur Park; not only squirrels and chipmunks, but they finally ended up with a skunk infestation due to improper garbage and food protection. One group had a bold skunk venture into the kitchen, so to 'shoo' it away they threw a bucket of river water on the critter; it sprayed, ran and sprayed some more; three of the five camps were shut down for a few weeks because of it. "Oh, but they're so cute !!" Yeah, right... until someone gets bitten or your larder shredded and inedible due to droppings. That is, unless you like raisins in your pancakes the next morning.......

Pompano! I think I would rather be bitten than have it 'do the nasty' on my nose!
