Spotted this bird near San Jose

I have a good buddy who is a famous Birder and who has written several books about that. Here is his reply to my message to him about what bird that
is: (I hope the Photoshop stuff wasn't you:-) )
If it's from desert-coastal Sonora it's a Canyon Towhee. If it's from Baja it's a California Towhee (you probably have them in your backyard). The
range maps show California Towhee in Baja, not the Canyon.
The photo was shot without compensating for the silhouette effect, leaving the facing side of the bird badly underexposed. They compensated with a
heavy hand in Photoshop to lighten it up, distorting the pattern and color. It actually looks vaguely like Rufous-winged Sparrow, rare in S AZ, but
I'm sure it's a towhee messed up with post-processing due to proportions and some of the marks and color that remain.

The bird was seen in San Jose del Cabo. My friend touched it up due to the sun being behind it.. Thanks for the reply
