Antelope Reservoir

Camped at Antelope Reservoir in Oregon on the Idaho border --- alone with with the wild and crazy sky just the way we like it. May be headed to North Dakota, or not

There's a lot of drama in those clouds.

Where's the Antelope?

bajabuddha - 5-30-2015 at 11:36 AM

If you're still in the area, check out Jarbidge, Nevada. Just south of the Idaho/Nevada line. Worth the trip.
Have fun!

Thanks for looking and your comments.

Bajagrouper, the pronghorn are raiding the farms.

Budda, Jar bridge looks interesting. Maybe next time. Thanks for the tip.

Jarbidge (not Jar Bidge) is a bucket-list destination. It's as far away from anywhere you can get. Anyone here ever been there? It's an old ex-mining town on the north slope of the Jarbidge Wilderness Area of Nevada. One way in, one way out, and as remote as DK's mind. Trout stream, wildlife galore, and the only reason to go there is ... well, just to go there. I was told about the 'Red Dog Saloon' about 30+ years ago, so I went to visit. It was closed for renovation, so the only other saloon in town was our 'watering hole'. As the story goes, we settled in during the town's monthly 'birthday party' for everyone born in..... whenever month we were there............. word got out we were there to see the Red Dog, and Lo! And Behold, the owner of the RDS showed up during the party and invited us for a full tour of the "Ol' Place" even though it wasn't open. Workers were asleep in cots in the bar when we went in; the owner said, "SPECIAL GUESTS!!" and all rolled over, no groans or moans. We sat at the bar, heard the whole history, and had 2 rounds ON THE HOUSE. Feeling bad for the carpinteros, we adjourned back to....... the other place....... (it still might come to me) and proceeded to help with the ongoing town birthday party. After most guests left (we were still young and virile) and about 2 a.m. or so, we asked "when do you guys close up? We don't wanna keep you..."......... the bar wench looked wryly at me and said, "Where did you say you were frum???" I smiled equally wryly and ordered another round.

Thank gawdamighty for Nevada. They legalized Adulthood.

Again, (sorry for the hijack Jack.....) Anyone else been to Jarbidge NV?

{edit} finally remembered the other bar.... "The Outdoor Inn"...

And while you are up that-a-ways, on your way back towards "civilization", stop by the Midas Saloon and Dinner House

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Midas-Saloon-and-Dinner-House...

And if you ever pass through Winnemucca, this is a "must stop"

Oh give me a home
Where the buffalo roam
and the deer and the antelope play
Where seldom is heard
A discouraging word
and the skies are all cloudy all day

Wait a minute. That's in North Dakota and Pompano call tell you exactly where.

DianaT - 6-1-2015 at 07:38 PM

Budda, I saw on the map it was Jarbridge, but my phone at times seems too much for itself at times as I type. :-) I LOVE that story and we WILL get there.

bajaguy --- Winnemucca is a place we tend to just pass through. We will need to check out that place.

And we are on our way to maybe see the buffalo roam --- if they are in the Roosevelt National Park. :-)

Diana, if you wanna see REAL bison (buffalo are African) and i'm not talking about Beefalo, look me up in Baja, NM, and I can take you out on a tour for bison, oryx, antelope, beefalo, desert tortoise, aplomado falcon, and the 2nd (or 3rd) largest Mexican split-tailed bat population in North America. Other than that, this place is the pits....... just a friggin' desert, kinda like Baja.......

Ain't life grand?

Where is Baja, New Mexico? I can't seem to find it. We have been to Cuba, New Mexico.

A few years ago we did visit the Bison Reserve in Montana --- pretty place

I think that was Art Linkletter's original name for Truth or Consequences

bajabuddha - 6-3-2015 at 11:30 AM

Actually Bob, it was "Hot Springs, NM" before 1950... and the name was changed thanks to Ralph Edwards and the old B&W TV show of the same name. The 'Baja' part is my own; just 'southern', as in Sierra County-ish. We're not New, or México. However, there have been Named families of Old México living from Las Cruces to Santa Fe since before Plymouth Rock was invaded. All the goodies I mentioned are on Captain America's ranch about 20 miles east of here.

Buddha, a bunch of businessmen, friends of mine in Las Vegas, fell in love with Jarbidge and bought a bar, the hoarhouse, The Honeymoon Cottage, several lots and other buildings there and made it their annual hunting lodge/town.

I drove there several times from Vegas and some flew in to Idaho and motored south. We hunted deer, chucker and huns all around that area. There was another way in from Elko but it was rough -- well worth the trouble for the various monster trout in Wild Horse res on the way.
