BajaLiz - 6-8-2015 at 03:26 PM

If you have ACTUALLY driven into Punta chivato from the highway since Blanca, can you please post what the road is like for a truck and trailer. Would like to drive it in the next couple days if safe. Gracias!!!

Highway does not go to Punta Chivato, so that would be on the side road east of the highway. Nomad Russ may be the best source of info on the access to Punta Chivato. Another option is the paved airport just north of the Punta Chivato road, and close to the highway, 'Palo Verde'. It serves Santa Rosalia (and Mulege) commercial needs.

A group went out to pull a truck out and they reported the road is a real mess and not passable now after so many rigs worked it over trying to free the truck. The truck is still there. Don't even try because there won't be a rescue from this side. Equipment has been requested to make repairs and I'll post when there is a reasonable chance to get in.
edit: I am only reporting from radio reports I've overheard here. So I'm not taking credit for first hand observation. I do plan on going out that way later when I have fixed what little damage I and neighbors have.

Thanks Russ! I would still like to drive in this week if at all possible. I am waiting to see if Ken makes it in today, I believe Brett said he was flying in to Loreto today. My friends will fly in to the strip if OK.
I appreciate the info and notice if Ken does drive in tonight!

Liz , you may want to keep updated on the road conditions befor driving out there

BajaLiz - 6-9-2015 at 12:05 PM

Yes that is the whole idea!!!

chivatojoe - 6-9-2015 at 12:34 PM

Hello Baja Liz. Chivatojoe here. Next door neighbor to Bret. Flew out early Sunday morning. Here is a report on road and runway to follow from my neighbors two doors down. Hope it helps. I do fly three different airplanes down to Chivato and have the open door hangar on the taxiway...

From Smoothsails:
Morning...we will go look and tell you what we see. Just got back from road check bad but not as bad as we have seen.
Carlos was on the worst of it with shovels and crew this morning and it is passable single lane truck. Tito is right behind him with his loader so things should be back to normal soon. Will have to get Russ over here to look at our weather gage monitor. It was very accurate in Texas so should be fine here......... Let you know re airstrip.

Russ - 6-9-2015 at 05:04 PM

Last report I had at 2pm was the tractor made a road/trail around the problem area and the road is open.
Just in... "The road from Palo Verde thru the estuary is good" after that there are some big puddles.
Also the runway looks good except for one area near midway. "If you stay left of center it is good"

what a lot of water ....glad everyone in PC is safe!

BajaLiz - 6-10-2015 at 10:34 AM

Thank you chivatojoe and Russ!!! I called Ken this am and he reported a 5 foot drop into the ravine so am just worried about the flatbed trailer..... If you both think I can get in with a 20 foot flatbed then we will head on in tomorrow am and the pilot will fly in med day in the Bonanza. Not nearly worried about the runway as I am about the truck and trailer!! Thanks for the updates!! anyone have a pic of the deep ravine I would have to cross??

Russ - 6-10-2015 at 12:38 PM

If you're referring to the hwy, chances are it is repaired for the simi traffic by now. Lots of equipment in the area to get it filled in and smoothed out.

BajaLiz - 6-10-2015 at 01:28 PM

no Ken said the big ditch was on the road in....... Hwy is fine.......

Error in runway condition and recommendation

Russ - 6-10-2015 at 01:34 PM

I stated that you should stay right of the center line when coming in. That is wrong. Stay LEFT of center. Sorry for the bad info. I do try to post accurate info and wrote down what I thought I heard. Good thing my source saw it and had me correct it. SORRY all.:(

coming in over the water as most do. I'm no pilot
"Bob says runway 31...people don't normally use 13 because it is coming in over the hills/mountains"

BajaLiz - 6-11-2015 at 03:10 PM

Runway good condition, west end of runway has slight erosions. Road driving in was great over the previously eroded arroyo. 2 large puddles closer to the water that were fairly deep for my truck and flatbed, but besides a dirty truck now, all passable for a high clearance vehicle. Thanks for everyone's input! Here at the beachhouse now and absolutely beautiful!!!
