Tuna Crabs make it to Southern California

tripledigitken - 6-14-2015 at 01:18 PM

Pleuroncodes planipes, sometimes called the pelagic red crab (or simply "red crab"), tuna crab or langostilla, is a species of squat lobster from the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The same phenomenon happening in Baja has come to San Diego.

Some are suggesting their appearance is because of an El Nino...

Large numbers have been washing ashore for almost a week. There are still some left this morning. We found these at Ocean Beach and La Jolla.

directly related to the coming El Nino. this is only the 3rd time i've seen them this far north which coincides with previous El Nino's!

Are these also the pelagic crab known as "krill" that baleen whales feed on? Same critter or related maybe?

...answered my own question. Two different critters, but close.

krill are maybe 1/3" long and tuna crabs are maybe 3" long. totally different.
