Hitler and his bunkers - may we NEVER forget

Because Poland belonged to Germany, Hitler left his mark all around the northeast corner of Poland, right where we are at. Today, we went to visit one of the main headquarters.....apparently Hitler and Mussolini along with others walked where we walked today.

Here is a short version and I will post the link to the almost 100 photos for those who have A LOT of time on their hands. I took extensive pics as I am pretty sure none of you will ever experience this part of history. And as much as I hate Hitler, I think it is imperative that we remember this terrible time in our world:

WELL -THAT IS A TASTE OF WHAT WE SAW TODAY. THERE ARE MORE BUNKERS THERE AND WE WILL SEE THOSE NEXT MONTH WHEN OUR BRITISH FRIENDS WILL BE OVER FOR A VISIT.

Hope you don't think this is too much of a hijack, Blanca, but it's somewhat relevant. This is very coincidental account of two men involved in the WWII bombing of Berlin by US bombers based in England.


One morning at my casa in Coyote Bay a few friends were having morning coffee and discussing events. Among these amigos were 2 men who were each involved in WWII in Germany. They had never met until that morning.



One was Bill, an older retired Republic Airline pilot who had flown a B-17 in long range bomber raids against Berlin and other German cities between 1943 and 1945. These were the planes known as the Flying Fortress and were heavily armed. Bill's job was to fly the plane that dropped bombs on Berlin's industrial complexes in order to shorten the war. He flew many missions and survived the extremely high mortality rate suffered by these bomber squadrons. Bill had a hilltop home near Posada.


Across the table and sharing coffee and donuts was another amigo named Peter, a few years younger, a German by birth, who had immigrated to the US, (Half Moon Bay) long after the war, and later found a place in Baja. Peter's family was killed in a raid and he had grown up in war-time Berlin as a child of the streets. He said he ate whatever he could to keep alive...some not so nice items. He remembered the bombings clearly and had enough street smarts to survive the war, the occupation, and went on to become a successful architect.

I introduced Bill and Peter that morning. Quite a reunion, eh? I can imagine young Peter dodging a bomb dropped by Bill's plane. It's a small world indeed...and I'm very glad they both survived to enjoy Baja.
