Our new camper -- the jury is out again.

DianaT - 6-19-2015 at 08:52 PM

We have discovered another problem with this camper so the jury is out --- Our last Outfitter had NO problems. :fire:
It is about being in places like this --- so beautiful and peaceful, and now that the solar is working so well, the more remote areas call us. While this is the popular rec place, the Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming, we were away from the crowds and just loved being there.

I don't think I've seen a shinier Toyota.

Being away from crowds is the best! Camper looks sweet.

Those huge thunder showers cleaned it up real nice. They even removed most of the bugs.

Headed to the Toyota dealer this week because the exhaust burned a big hole in the mud flap! It just ain't perfect.

It will be great in Baja --- after Alaska With the solar system working so well now, and the larger refrigerator, it is good for many days.

Great looking and capable rig.

Just a comment, though -

We have used a superb solar system on our rig all over Baja and the western US for the past 15 years.

Last year we made a four month trip to Alaska.

The solar system was pretty much non-functional for most of the trip while north of central British Columbia. Why? It was cloudy a lot, the sun angle is relatively low, and 95% of the campsites are heavily shaded by trees.

Sure do enjoy your photos of your many and varied trips. Keep 'em coming....

How's the 'cloth' section in any wind? Loud or no?
Thanks

Whale-ista - 6-20-2015 at 07:25 AM

Nice! Is that a Four-wheel camper or another manufacturer?

Any interior shots?

StuckSucks - 6-20-2015 at 08:17 AM

Very Nice!!!!!!! Thanks for posting

Diana, so you are headed north! Do you have a Milepost travel guide? Tons of useful info in it, although it is usually a year old by the time it is published. Even an old copy is great for ideas and planning purposes.

Are you going up the old AK highway, or the Cassiar route? Stewart/Hyder off of the Cassiar Highway is worth the side trip. Taking a state ferry from Valdez to Whittier or Seward is an option also. The ferry is usually booked this time of year, but there is almost always space available on a first come basis.

Lots of options for you up north, have a great trip!

Diane, like a new boat, every new camper is a gem. Glad you are enjoying yours on this trip. As already said, don't rely on great performance from solar panels or any clear sky equipment when traveling to Alaska. Most campgrounds will be heavily wooded..not good for solar energy, satellite reception, etc.

This a typical scene for campsites along the route. Lots of trees!

Milepost magazine is definitely a must have for all kinds of information.
I agree that the Cassiar Highway is the way to go. I caught some nice trout dinners at this campsite on the Cassiar. And later in Valdez, it was fun to watch the cruise liners from our rear picture window and they headed towards the Inland Waterway.

Enjoy the Life!

Thank you --- glad you enjoy the pictures. And thank you for the information about solar and Alaska. We will just run the motor when necessary for a charge. Our first trip to Alaska was in a VW-van and our last trip to BC was in a camper with no solar.

Makes noise, but not enough that we find it a concern --- I just hate it when the wind rocks the camper. :-)

Not sure how we are going. We often plan as we go and take our chances on ferries etc. THANKS for reminding me of the Milepost. We used it a lot on our previous trips up that way! It has been a several years, so the old one is gone, but I will order another one!

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE NICE COMMENTS.

Roger, I did not see your response before I responded. Yes, we will get the Milepost again. It has been probably 15 years since we went to Alaska in a VW van, and then quite a ways up BC with our other camper in about 2006 and neither had solar. We will just keep it charged with the engine when needed.

We have some places to which we want to return, and others we have not seen yet. We also enjoyed Valdez and will probably return, and I want to go back to Chicken and in BC, probably will return to Bella Coola. Other than than, who knows. We tend to travel one day at a time. BTW --- we had a small Casita Fiberglass Egg trailer for a while --- took it back to Prince Edward Island, down to Patzcuarro, Mexico, down Baja, and a number of other places. For us, we found towing anything was not what we wanted to do.

And frankly, after several trips and a few years, this camper will probably go as we have some other plans in the back of our minds. We enjoyed the trailer, we enjoyed the other camper, and we enjoyed our place in Asuncion, but change is always a good thing for us. Shoot, we think wherewe are living will probably be our last move, but it probably won't be.

Thanks for the pictures and thoughts.

You will love Alaska. One of the best things up there is the gentle light. You can shoot all day long and never worry about blown out highlights. Your camera can handle the range of light the entire day. That's so different from Baja where you have to wait for the magic hour.

That Curt gowdy park looks very inviting.
