Red or Green Jerrycan?

Hi.

i wander if is there eny laws in Mexico about color of a jerrycan for extra fuel.

Mine is in my green and is in the extirior rack by my spare tire

i do a lot of off road and my truck drinks a lot, and i'm not taking about Tequila

I used a white jerrycan last year when my red one sprung a leak at Baja Cactus. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Red for gas, yellow for diesel and blue for kerosene. Those are Calif./US regulations. Green is for other flammable liquids. It is really not a good idea to put any of these fuels into the wrong machine, that is why we have color coded cans.

Heck, in Mexico you still see people with gas in glass gallon jugs.

Mine is green and is mounted on the outside of my jeep. Been all over Baja and the mainland and never had a problem.

I've got the genuine NATO/US Military green jerry cans myself. They are labeled for fuel only. No problems and driven to Cabo and back a few times and not once has anyone said anything.

Who is going to be the "authority" to check the color-liquid correlations? Seems like you could use whatever container you want to as long as you remember what you put in there in the first place.....

Or did I miss the memo about gas container fashionistas ?:rolleyes:

I intentionally put diesel in a red gasoline can where I was staying in northern CA, because the 20 something btards next door kept helping themselves. You guessed it, gasoline was in the yellow can.

For Baja, I am thinking of a red can, with green stripes, like Christmas candy. The decorations usually come out while I am down there.

NATO cans - those expensive metal ones that cost $70 or so - come in either green or red. One company makes green, another one - red. Nice cans, no eco-sh-t of any kind, just a can with plug. Nozzle-funnel sold separately, also expensive.

I use black NATO jerry cans for diesel. They are expensive but worth the $ IMO. They donīt leak even when upside down (long story). Donīt buy the chinese knock offs. Make sure they are Wavian cans.

One point about carrying extra fuel: bring the cans (whatever color they may be) to Mexico empty and fill up when you get there. Customs will object to bringing extra fuel into the country.

Plastic dump cans. They have a small, square footprint, they are bullet proof, don't dent or rust. You can see gas level as well as color (e.g. premium, regular, race) thru the walls. Jerry cans are so 1950s.

Keep the green one and buy a white and red one also. Then if you paint an eagle on the white one and mount all 3 on your rack all the locals will think you're cool

Yep! Hah. Ok so you can get the metal ones which are pretty good, but the best now are the Scepter made plastic ones. I got mine used through a military surplus supplier but were still $50 each. The nozzle I made with some materials at Hope Depot though.

I was stopped by federalies at cabo airport for the usual sportsmobile shakedown. I had 2 blue and 1 red strapped on the back. I had one officer smell my my blue containers. Lucky they where empty and only smelt like gas. He wanted to give me a ticket in the worst way.

You should see the video of metal NATO cans tested: Wavian Jerry Can Testing. Check from Minute 5 and on. In a pool of burning gas for 2 minutes. Try doing this with plastic.

Donno but my buddy who served in Afghanistan and Iraq said they always used the plastic ones, and are more robust than the metal. :?: So I took his (as well as 99% of those who offroad) advice and got the Scepter MFC. Lots of research showing they are superior to metal.
