drive times from SD to BdeLA

woody with a view - 7-6-2015 at 02:38 PM

using google maps there are large variations in travel times. https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/San+Diego,+CA,+USA/Bah%C3%ADa...

I thought I read here that mileage was about 60 miles further going thru Mexicali as opposed to going down Mex1. google says its over an hour shorter to go Mex1. any first hand reports? Mex1 is getting to be a bear trying to get south of SQ.

I hit the border at 3:00 AM and usually through SQ pretty early. It works for me. Hate going down the SOC side. That's just me though.

For others, the SOC is more of a destination, rather than just a route. Personaly, I have little desire to do the Ensenada, San Quintine side again.

I'm all for the most direct route and going 2 hours east isn't my idea of direct, so I ask if its a wash like I think I heard or what?

I understand why the SOC has it's draws. If I don't have a destination along there, I'll take the cooler side to BdeLA, I do like the area south of BdeLA, just not in July or Aug. From my place in the USA the 1 side is about 1.5 faster too.
Woody, try it, If it works it works.

I have, I just didn't time it. since reality is 90% perception i'll just stick to the SLOW direct route, unless someone chimes in later.

Woody
For me door to door it was 25 miles farther to go through San Filipe and about 1 hour longer. But the road through San Filipe is so much easier, no windy hills and slow trucks. It is worth the 23 miles of dirt road to avoid the 400 miles of hiway 1. You should at least try it and form your own opinion.

Woody, go for it and please report back. I have often thought going that way just to avoid Ensenada and the next hour or so of hills.

I might go down the 1 and back up thru San Flippy in august just because. something to think about.

Woody, there aren't 'twenty' farm towns or the city of Ensenada to drive through when using Mex. 5... and that alone should make the few extra miles and dirt section more desirable, plus you drive a good vehicle.

I did that in January and liked it, but we ended up going from San Felipe to Ensenada and stayed for a night, due to running out of light, and wanting to spend the night there. A breakfast break at Alfonsina's hit the spot too, as did lunch in San Felipe!

Enjoy the trip.

The trick to responding with a quote is to begin your reply AFTER the quote end tag. Looks like this: [/rquote ], so just scroll down to the bottom of the reply box to be sure you begin typing past the quote part. You can still edit the original, and you can remove the "Edited on..." lines so when you post, only one will show from that last edit.

Edited...
