I thought for sure I was being bamboozled by stories of catching catfish in BOLA but on further review, looks like they are everywhere. I spend way
more time fishing for non-pelagics and I'm surprised I've never got one.

Lots of em! Used to take a couple of Mexican boys out at nite in Kino off the rocks, and fill a couple of 5 gallons buckets for em...evry once in a

We get them all the time out of San Lucas Cove especially in the bait areas. Be very careful as they have a spine on the back that is nothing short
of lethal. Unlike the fresh water variety, these have a serrated spine that is very sharp, very hard to pull out, and penetrates with ease. We had a
guy that had to have it cut out of his hand, so take great care with them.

I've caught 'em both near San Lucas and in Bahia Concepcion. Let 'em go, but the book says they're as tasty as channel cats, just watch out for the
fin spikes; says they have more toxin than a fresh water catfish. Back in The Day I would catch-and-release all my trout, but fillet-and-release all

When trolling out of Ligui we came across a commotion out at the Islets. Birds were diving on what appeared to be bait fish on the surface. We moved
into the action and to our astonishment we discovered hundreds of Catfish heads still twitching after losing the back half of their bodies (behind the
dorsal spine) to a pair of sea lions. It must have been a huge school. The gulls tried to capitalize on this bonanza but could only peck at the heads
with little or no gain. They were too big to choke down especially with the poisonous spine protruding from the back. Even the pelicans were having
none of it.

May I also suggest be wary of those two lateral fins behind the gills; they also have a spike along the front edge, not just the top dorsal. The

Back in the 1960's, there were catfish south of San Felipe... we caught them at Agua de Chale (Nuevo Mazatlan), and the camp owner Luis said that they

If your hand is big enough you can slide the top spike between your first and second finger and then hook both of the side spikes with those same

I am from Houston and I can tell you the Gaftop or salt water catfish you catch down there in no way compares with a good fresh water catfish. the
