I'm thinking about taking an old kayak down to Baja. It will be on my roof rack for the trip down. Should I expect any issues at the border like
having to get an import permit? It is a boat of sorts...

no problema!!!
Have fun..but you do need a fishing license if you fish from it.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen in Baja was an old VW Beetle with a 19 foot kayak strapped on top trying to drive through the streets of
La Paz and trying to make a corner with out hitting something or someone........

Kayak or canoe doesn't require import permit, be it old or new one. I'll be bringing one in the fall, a square stern canoe, will see how it goes.
Small stern, not like a jon boat. Hopefully they won't stop me, seeing this plastic Tupperware on top of a compact car. If you can car-top it, then
it's not a "boat", for God's sake.
I'll take all the papers where it says "canoe". Will keep my fingers crossed, 'cause if they stop me, and I convince them that this is a canoe, they
might make me pay at least for a brand new 2 hp motor in the trunk.
Some canoes are huge. I've seen a Freighter by Scott Canoe, 21ft, 250 lbs weight, 2000 lb payload, people are hunting moose in this. Needs a trailer.
Basically, a panga, only different shape. I wonder what they would say if anybody brought that "lil' old canoe" to SY.
Scott Freighter (I think it's 30hp outboard):

I take a sit on top to San Felipe, there is no interest in the boat by Mex customs,
but since you
asked the ?,
I remember one incident, yrs back, a Gringo crossing at Otay
was asked for either the registration on the kayak or bill of
sale, but as posted, no boat permit needed. Yrs back, guys that
went strictly yak fishing, would get a boat permit, since it is
a boat with fishing gear, don't know exactly how that would
play out now

Thanks!
Ended up not bringing the kayak on this trip. I ran out of time to pick it up. Just stopped for food and ice cream in Guerrero Negro.
