Don't know what's so surprising here, Mexican have been going everywhere in Baja in 2 wheel (er actually 1 wheel) drive vehicles for many decades. Us

As for driving in the desert or in sand:

4WD on dirt roads (specially grades) reduces tire spin and road damage (gigging ruts). With traction control on many newer rigs, the spinning is
reduced even further. If you like to drive faster on dirt roads, then using 4WD will make the drive safer, keeping you in the road and less drifting
off.
No doubt the Mexicans get their sedans and 2WD trucks most anywhere in Baja, but their bad shocks cause the common graded road washboard surface and
the spinning tires destroy roadbeds on hillclimbs. Off road racers are almost all 2WD, and roads are really torn up after they use them... spinning

@Cliffy....If it makes you feel better my new Tundra took a dirt bath down the El Compadre trail when it had 120 miles on it. But I agree...there are
way too many lifted 4WD trucks driving around looking suspiciously clean...
