I've been using both of the border wait apps for over a year now and neither of them seem accurate at all for san ysidro or otay, ready or standard
lanes. Does anyone know how they calculate the wait time? I read somewhere that they ask travelers how long the wait was but if that is true, everyone
must lying? Any ideas?

Whatever they report double it.

I only cross at Otay or Tecate.
As the CBP excuses me from further questions, they ask me (as a BTW) how long I've been waiting in line.
Twice I've heard on their radio if they are asking for border wait times, and to report in.
I give them an accurate report, but I don't know if anyone else does.

I volunteer the information. They usually don't acknowledge it. Whatever.

Lately I've been crossing at San Ysidro about once a week, driving, using the regular lanes because my passenger doesn't have Ready or Sentri docs.
I use this website:
http://traffic.calit2.net/border/border-wait-times.php?type=...
Crossing times have been about twice as long as the website suggests. But it is summer, kids are out of school so the traffic is heavier. But I think
the shapes of the lines are pretty accurate. I crossed north bound at 9:30 this morning. The website predicted 35 minutes, it took 70 minutes.
It's great they made tandem booths in each lane. Now what they need to do is man both booths. Maybe they'll figure that out someday.
A couple of times they asked me how long I waited.
