MX airport to another?

I flew from TJ to Loreto a couple of months ago and they did ask for a passport at check-in, but I think it was only for ID purposes. I don't think a

AK Gringo-If you are flying to a border town from central Mexico they will ask for your visa and on occasion they will ask for your passport. If you
are flying anywhere else you don't need to show anything.

Nchampion and LL, thanks for the input! Since the link to Calafia was posted, their site indicates that proof of ID should be enough to board, but I
will still need FMMs.
I have a passport, but I have offered to pay for passports for four grandchildren and two adults. The passport cards might be better for the kids,
and would save me a few bucks besides.

Technically, one doesn't need a passport if he doesn't cross the border.
BUT.. you are a gringo. You've just crossed the border. Therefore - you must have a tourist card FMM and stamp in a passport. You are leaving the
border zone, therefore you are not exempt from FMM and stamp. You might be never asked to produce that FMM later, but technically you must have it.
This is the law.
Can they put a stamp in a "passport card" - I don't know, never had this card, I always carry a passport.
