Not Dead Yet
Mar de Cortez is being raped and there is little we can do to help here. My last couple of outings were dismal failures and I was with the best
Mexican fisherman around. Today was a better day.
Found the water to be almost boiling and dirty green so I wasn’t too hopeful but before 7 we joined a group of commercial fishermen and there seemed
to be action all around. We caught all the bait we could handle and while we were soaking that for tuna/yellowtail we saw 2 or 3 of the other pangas
hooked up to sailfish or marlin.
Our first fish was a whopper barillete, then 2 huge amberjack (not the little guys in the photo attached) and a nice 10 pound pargo. We were
surrounded by dolphin, it was a flat sea and mercifully overcast the whole morning. It slowed down and we moved inshore to the east to see if
yesterday’s small tuna, very close to shore, were still around. While chumming and wishing we started to catch some nice triggerfish.
We then trolled lures and live bait for dorado, marlin, sail, whatever and finally hooked a big strong marlin on the way back in. After a 15 minute
fight he came in still lit up and as Leonardo tried to grab the bill so we could release the hook, the big fish broke the line at the boat and took
off unharmed. We were followed all the way to the marina entrance by 2 small pods of pilot whales.
We shared a couple of beers while I sang “Seems like Old Times”.

Jorge,
a day like that would have us go back in in disgust in the 80's.
Shows how much expectations have changed.
