Santo Tomas area for camping?

Howard - 9-6-2015 at 11:10 PM

We will making our pilgrimage to Southern Baja the end of October and would like to change up the routine. There will be 3 rigs, 2 overhead campers and one trailer. Normally we cross the border and make the first day an easy one and stay in either Punta Banda or S.Q. and been very happy in either place.
This time I would like to go somewhere different for the first night, maybe around the Santa Tomas area and I am not familiar with that area.

Any recommendations down by the ocean anywhere near or around that area that has an RV park, with or without hook ups? We would prefer to stay on pavement or a very good dirt road. Years ago I stayed a little further South at Shipwrecks, is there any type of RV park there or place for 3 rigs on the water? I know they were building like crazy and don't know if there are just houses after houses with no place to camp on the aqua.

Thanks,
Howard

El Palomar RV Park

The El Palomar RV Park is right in Santo Tomas, the entrance is off the east side of the highway right across from the store/Pemex. Good place for an overnight stop.

Maybe 1/2 hour south of Santo Tomas is a paved road turn-off to the beach at Ejido Erendira. When you get to the coast you can follow a dirt road a few miles to the north for beach camping. No RV park per se. I haven't been there in several years so I don't know road conditions.

I remember the road going across the arroyo, where you turn south just before the ejido, was in bad shape the last time I was there, but that was several years ago.

North of San Quintin in Colonia V. Guerrero is Posada Don Diego RV Park, south end of town top of hill before propane place is access road west. Owner is a Nomad.

The El Palomar is next to the Santo Tomas mission ruins, walk north from the park compound. This was the last California mission to remain in operation. Founded in 1791 then moved to this spot in 1799, abandoned in 1849.

Check-out Coyote Cal's on the beach..

Turn-off at Santo Tomas and go into and down along the coast (part of BK1 course)..or take the easier route in at Erendria..

EDIT: Noticed you were heading down "late October".. beware that SCORE BK1 pre-running would be starting around mid-Oct, and there is a good chance this section of the coast is part of this year's race.. The southern route through Erendira would be safer in and out of the area,,,

Thanks for your feedback. Ejido Erendira sounds interesting as we are looking for a little adventure rather than just pulling off of highway #1 to an RV park to spend the night.

Anyone else been out Erendira's way?

Road from santo tomas out to the coast is probably a little rough for the rv's. The paved road to erendira is smooth sailing. The dirt road to Malibu isn't bad. Malibu rv is rustic but with incredible views of the pacific.
