Lobster Season begins today in Bahia Asuncion

shari - 10-1-2015 at 04:39 PM

It is always an exciting day that begins with the blessing of the fleet. The traps are filled with fresh sardines for bait, loaded onto the pangas and placed in strategic places all over the area. Here are some photos in the cove Ensenadita next to our place.

these are the "recivos" or holding cages the lobsters they get daily are kept alive in, anchored close to the panga anchorage. There are big floodlights on them at night to avoid poaching. The numbers on it are the team number.

I can taste one of those bugs now...ummmmm.

Hey Shari
Coming in there for the first time ever and looking forward to seeing a new spot. It'll be around Nov 4. I will be on my way to my cousins in Loreto to fish, and have been told this is when the winds get regular on the gulf. In comparison, is there less wind in Nov at Asuncion?

woody with a view - 10-1-2015 at 07:08 PM

yes, it's almost perfect then.

Interesting in that they have holding pens for the lobster and don't ship them out daily. Is this a market strategy? Hold'em while waiting for a higher price or maybe availability of a shipping method?

shari - 10-2-2015 at 07:12 AM

look forward to meeting you hombre! The weather is November is great as is the fishing...which is already great...wahoo, tuna, dorado, yellowtail!

there isnt enough lobster to fill the semi every day so they wait till they have enough product, keep them alive, then a couple times a week, ship em up to Ensenada where they distribute them.

woody with a view - 10-2-2015 at 07:13 AM

why ship out 300 a day when you can make a weekly trip with 5000 lobsters?

i'm positive my math is wrong!

desertcpl - 10-2-2015 at 09:26 AM

Yum

are you able to keep some for local consumption,, I understand that the fisherman will be able to keep some

BajaBlanca - 10-2-2015 at 01:29 PM

I don't think they are allowed to keep any. not at all.

however, you can buy them in restaurants here in La Bocana and I am sure in BAsuncion that holds true as well

There is always Marcos in Puerto Nuevo who will prepare a lobster feast for you to eat if you are staying with him.....and he cant accept cash for it but we usually take a trade item (steaks) and give him a "donation"!

Oh yeah, make that x10

shari - 10-2-2015 at 02:44 PM

the fishermen are strictly forbidden from keeping any lobster but the cooperativa passes out a few of the ones they cant sell because their legs are eaten off to the fishermen at the end of the week. You can get a lobster dinner at several restaurants here from 200-300 pesos usually.

BajaBlanca - 10-2-2015 at 04:19 PM

Yup! what she said!

Udo - 10-2-2015 at 04:39 PM

Lobster dinners/lunches prices have risen about 30% since last week (by the prices I saw on new stickers on restaurant menus).

I have not checked in Puerto Nuevo yet, however.

I hope all the fishermen come home to those that they love. That is a hard and unforgiving job.

BajaRat - 10-2-2015 at 07:05 PM

Conditions for opening day looked great !
Hoping for a good Langosta recovery after last years storms.
All the best, Lionel

well, the first couple days of lobster season have been disturbing as there are much fewer lobster being caught than normal..,..which has the lobster fishermen nervous. Perhaps due to the warmer water, they have moved from their traditional areas or are in deeper, cooler water???

Let's hope the fishermen find them soon.

SFandH - 10-3-2015 at 07:53 AM

Hope they don't start taking all the small ones they can get because of the scarcity. Warm water? I don't know. The same spiney lobster found off the California coast are found in the Caribbean.

shari - 10-3-2015 at 09:41 AM

No they absolutely wont take small ones...they HAVE to be legal size!!! they will simply get what they get and deal with the financial shortage. They are also very worried about the abalone with all this warm water...there is no kelp for them to eat. It wouldnt surprise me if there is no abalone fishery next season which would be devastating to our local economy.

Lobster in Punta Abreojos Is better than last year....not as good as the best years. The coop is also worried about the effects of warm water on the Abalone here.

I understand abalone was going for 1800 pesos a kilo with locked in contracts for sale to Asia?
Sound about right?
On edit.....do you know if they ship them whole and frozen or all canned up to Asia?

good to know things are OK in Abreojos..means the lobster are just moving around.

The abalone are all canned here and shipped to Asia and have different quality levels. One coop uses glass jars where they can whole abalone of the highest quality, and second best are chunks of abalone...yes the prices are very high which is why hardly anybody serves them in restaurants as they are very expensive to buy locally...why would they sell them for less

I need to be careful here...Haha... just said better than last year which was a bad one. We hope it continues.. This has not been a good year for the coop.
