Tequila, Cerveza and Metformin

CortezBlue - 10-7-2015 at 03:07 PM

Ok, recently had to start Metformin and my doctor told me that I can drink, but was not very explanatory.

So after doing some research I find some folks that drink a little and drink a lot but on the internet it talk's about lactic acidosis.

So my questions are:

1. How much Metformin daily

2. How much and often do you drink

3. What do you drink? Beer, Tequila, Wine etc.

4. Have you got drunk while on metformin and did you have any bad effects

5. Add anything that you would like regarding the mixture of these items

Best advice

I would call your Pharmacist in the states and ask him/her......relying on information from internet forums regarding health issues probably isn't a good idea

why not?

CortezBlue, drink up! Have all you want and then some. I've always heard alcohol and drugs don't mix, so what's the worry?

You apparently have type II diabetes. Metformin is the start, then comes Glipizide. Metformin usually starts at 1000mg (1g) daily, then on to x2/day. Same with the Glipizide; 5 mg x2/daily, then 10 mg x2/daily (at least was and is for me). AS LONG AS YOU MAINTAIN A GOOD DIET and stay away from sugars and carbs your drinking can continue in moderation. All things in moderation, especially moderation.

Far's what booze? It's what you mix it with that matters most. Stay away from any and all sugary booze concoctions. Margaritas of any kind are either sugary, or VERY sugary, depending on how authentic they are. Tequila is not. Instead of Gin and Tonic, do Gin and Seltzer (NOT soda..... high in salts).

Final note; diabetes is nothing to play with. It's slow and insidious, and they start whittling on you. Research well, talk to friends. I'm open to u2u. Alcohol and gasoline do not mix, so therefore, never drink gasoline. Diet has everything to do with it. Trade-offs are in order. Wake-up call. Buena Suerte.

Are you sure you don't mean 1,000 mg on the Metformin?

I think that illustrates bajaguy's point.

bajabuddha - 10-7-2015 at 09:11 PM

I missed a friggin' zero. 1000 mgs IS one gram, is it not? Yes.... 1000 mg. Cortez, I am truly sorry for trying to add anything to this discussion.

Just for future's sake I'm going to edit my former post to ONE THOUSAND MILLIGRAMS of Metformin .... I hope that doesn't create a firestorm.

what is it about carbs that you do not understand ?

BOOZE is carbs !!! understand it and STOP drinking depending on high your sugar level is. if you are early type II diabetes, you have the ability to alleviate this MAJOR problem.

if you stop now, you have the probability of defeating this debilitating disease. if not, and you are a heavy drinker, you will be inviting the doctors to start sawing off limbs starting with your feet.

you seem to be an intelligent person and computer literate. google the disease and abide by what it takes to resolve the problem.

check your sugar daily and if it's high, over 100, just keep doing what your doing and start losing limbs over the long haul.

i'm sure your family members look forward to babysitting your sorry ass because of your stupidity !!! cataracts, long haul kidney dialysis, loss of limbs. trust me, i have a family member that went through this and she died about two weeks ago after her/my daughter babysit her sorry ass for six years.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

Short answer is Tequila. All else in the way of spirits, will elevate your blood sugar.

Long answer, beyond simple mixture of your new med and booze . . . shed pounds if you should, walk, hold your A1C to 7 or below checking every 90 days, and let your meter become your new best friend. You can learn effect of everything you eat and drink. And, you need to. Rice, popcorn, beer or tequila. See what your machine likes. Minimize what it does not.

Live well with your new found diagnosis my friend. I do. Numerous shots of insulin daily . . . numerous shots of tequila weekly . . . for decades. When my wife is present at endocrinology appointments and the good doctor says, "Just keep doing what you are doing Jeff", she rolls her eyes. It's not rocket science.

Finally, remember the magic drug. Better than metformin all else in balance:

It's all about your carb (sugar) intake. For me, my go to drink now is red wine with an occasional hard alcohol drink. Just check your blood sugar level and that will let you know how you are doing. I am sure your Dr. told you about the ultimate test, the A1C blood test which measures your levels for a 6 month average.
The general rule of thumb is, " if it's white, it's not right" with emphasis on white rice and white bread or actually most rice and bread.

BajaBlanca - 10-8-2015 at 09:22 AM

I am on metformin and have been for years. I take one pill in the am and another in the pm

I always take with food as that is what it says on the bottle.

Booze - give it at least one hour after you take your meds or only take the pills one hour after you have drunk alcolhol or you will spend the next 12 hours + in the bathroom. and it aint fun. trust me!

I bought myself a little machine to check sugar and although I don't do it three times a day unless my sugar is off the charts, I find it really helps to keep you on track.

good foods are veggies that are green

very careful with fruits which have lots of sugar

try to limit anything white - flour - tortillas - cake - sigh SIGH S I G H = all the good stuff hahaha

For those who can't or didn't read, my main question is around Lactic Acidosis

I have been managing my sugars for nearly 10 years w/o drugs.

My A1c climbed into the high 6's and the doc started the pills

so

So I am curious how many drinks are to many for having issues around Lactic Acidosis issues or is it so rare not really an issue

This is not a new thing. Been managing BG for 10 years w/o drugs. A1C creeped into 7 land and started taking Metformin

More curious about Lactic Acidosis

That is why the questions about booze was interjected

bajabuddha - 10-8-2015 at 11:14 AM

Google and Wiki the Lactic Acidosis. Sounds like a separate entity from your diabetes; don't know if it's directly related or not, or if it has significant co-related issues. Your doctor will be your best advisor. Meantime, take two Corralejos and call me in the morning.

Drinking and Diabetes

MrBillM - 10-8-2015 at 03:53 PM

I had a aged Diabetic Insulin-taking next-door neighbor in Baja for many years who would take his Blood-Sugar reading in the a.m. and compute how many Beers he could drink that day.

He had it pretty well figured out. I'm unaware of his ever having a problem.

He's long dead now (from Emphysema) BUT, he made it to 91.

Dragging an Oxygen tank around for the last 5-6 years.

And still drinking.

BajaBlanca - 10-8-2015 at 04:05 PM

If you are testing yourself once you start the metformin, your body will certainly tell you what is acceptable and what is not. By that I mean, in your case, how many beers, how many tequilas or whatever. as well as how it reacts to being drunk.

no clue about the acid question.

bajabuddha - 10-8-2015 at 04:46 PM

Again, all things in moderation, especially moderation. Diet, exercise and a few toddies... everything that's enjoyable is either illegal, immoral or fattening.

And RAT, you need to tone down your sorry ass rhetoric; you don't know me or my story well enough to play key-board tough-guy. Sorry about your 'family member'... we all make our choices. I've lost friends and family to The Big D too, and did EMS on an Indian Res... and my adult onset was possibly from Agent Orange; I do what I do, dude.

Bien Salud y Ud.
