As a kid in Minnesota's north woods back in the 1950's we used a similar method to get tractors unstuck. Involved a small log chained to both driving wheels and repositioning it after every quarter rotation or so. There was always the danger of flipping the tractor so we were pretty careful but as a last resort it worked.

clever ideas. the sand solution is time & labor intensive, so bring friends. And if the tide is coming in...bring more friends- fast!
