Theft at malarrimos

Rumrunner - 10-24-2015 at 10:13 AM

Stopped for one night last week. Checked in at 10 pm took the rods and reels
To the room. Left at 5am. Noticed fishing boots and some tackle missing. Woke up the night "watchman" took while to get him to answer. He was muttering profanities and said he didn't see anything. Only a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff, but just wanted to give a heads up.

Was it stolen from a locked vehicle or from an open pickup bed?
An open vehicle in any parking lot is never safe keeping, even with a night watchman (whether awake or asleep).

Whale-ista - 10-24-2015 at 11:03 AM

Same question as Goat- were the items locked in car/cab, left in truck bed or...?

The parking lot at this place is like most in Baja: open and easy to access. In my experience: Better to lock up any items you don't want to replace, or take them with you into room. Not just at this place, but anywhere while traveling SOB, even in a "secure" parking area with an insomniac watchman.

David K - 10-24-2015 at 11:28 AM

MALARRIMO

(an easy way to remember if the Rs or Ls are doubled is that two Ls in a Spanish word make an English Y sound. LOS BARRILES is the other sample where the L is accidentally doubled).

Sorry you got ripped off in a hotel parking lot!

bajabuddha - 10-24-2015 at 11:57 AM

Age-old adage anywhere in the world:

If you love it, LOCK IT.

BajaBlanca - 10-24-2015 at 12:36 PM

Ahgreed! sorry to hear about your lloss. I've been luckyy with closed plazas and night watchmenn so farr.

Rumrunner - 10-24-2015 at 02:03 PM

Yep. Open truck bed. I know better, not crying about it. First time
I have had anything taken in 40 years.. Usually have the boat with me and lock everything of value in the cabin. Truck was piled high with gear, would have taken half the night to take it to the room and back.

Rumrunner - 10-24-2015 at 02:14 PM

Thanks David for the spelling correction.
I knew I could count on you! On a side note
At the border going south bound I was asked to back
Up to get over to the X-ray lane. Apparently all
Boats get xrayed now. My friend came through
After me and popped two tires in the process.
They want you to use the bus lane if you have a boat.

Whale-ista - 10-24-2015 at 02:39 PM

Sorry you lost gear on this trip.

Sounds like overall you've had a good run. 40 years with no thefts is amazing!

BajaBlanca - 10-24-2015 at 02:56 PM

why did his tires pop?

Rumrunner - 10-24-2015 at 03:02 PM

Hi Blanca! They had him back over a one way spike strip!
They then escorted him into TJ so he could replace them.

Thank you for your report.
I am glad you took my reply in the positive/ learning spirit I intend them to be.
I hope your next Baja trip is less dramatic and even more fun!

Bajahowodd - 10-24-2015 at 04:51 PM

There always is alot of activity along the main drag in GN at night. It's always cruise night there. The disco at Caracoles rocks into the wee hours. Doubt there was any security at the hotel.

Escorted him right to his cousins` tire shop!!

shari - 10-25-2015 at 07:53 AM

In my opinion, the only truly secure parking if you have your truck packed etc is at Posada don Vicente as they have a high wall all around and a locked gate all night long plus a very good night watchman.

the rooms are a bit weary but clean and good wifi and even an indoor pool and very economical too.

vandenberg - 10-25-2015 at 08:06 AM

Agreed Shari. That's where we stay when we are loaded down.

BajaBlanca - 10-28-2015 at 09:49 AM

I stayed at cowboys last night because of this report about the stealing -my car is filled to the brim with everything I bought for the teens. I would be DEVASTATED if even one pair of shorts was touched.

I went to dinner at Malarrimo because the filet mignon is beyond delicious. I talked to the waiter and then the manager about the robbery and they are going to take steps. It seems to me that the night watchman MUST be awake at all times.

The said they had never heard about a robbery before and were not happy. I told them that the negative publicity was damaging.

They were packed last night - full house.

Hopefully that was the end of that episode of this hotel's history and there will be no more stealing.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

those reverses onto one way tire slicers are lethal! A friend slashed all 4 tires of a rental doing that once. Way to start a trip eh?

David K - 10-28-2015 at 09:55 AM

Maybe photos of each hotel's parking area to compare (for those who need some security)?

Shari posted Posada Don Vicente was the only true secure parking... but then Blanca chose Cowboys Motel for security reasons?

What about Las Conchas or whatever the name was of the place Sirena worked?

mtgoat666 - 10-28-2015 at 11:00 AM

There is no such thing as secure motel parking. Even if you go to a motel with walls topped by razor wire. All motels have theft risk. If you cant accept risk of theft, then take your stuff into hotel room.

shari - 10-28-2015 at 02:44 PM

All other hotel parking lots are open to the public more or less...some like Cowboy have a narrow entrance but is not monitored. Las Dunas beside the grocery store puts a rope across the entrance at night and also has someone in the office right at the entrance but most tourists wouldnt like the quality of those rooms or beds.

Posada Don Vicente is the only place with a big iron gate that is closed at night and there is the night watchman on duty right beside the gate...the guy has worked there for many years.

But as often is the case...Goat has a good point as people inside the hotel parking could always steal something too.

Udo - 10-28-2015 at 05:50 PM

It happened to me also about three years ago at Cowboys. The owner, Chabelo, met with me after I made the police report at the office of the Delegacion. He swore he would make it up to me if I did not say anything on the web about the theft. After numerous phone calls and three personal visits within 18 months, he did NOTHING!
The other hotel that I know has had theft problems is the new one on the curve into GN. I only read about that hotel and the theft on another site (I monitor 7 Baja bulletin boards).
In the case of the Cowboy hotel, the night watchman was distracted into the office by one of the thieves, while the theft occurred in the parking lot. The watchman saw the car race out of his lot with our stuff and was able to obtain a description and lic. plate of the car. It turned out that the main perp. was related to one of the municipality's officials, and nothing was done as far as punishment by the local cops.:fire:

What would you like Chavelo to do Udo? You know that in Mexico, perps can get away with things if they are connected politically...not really much Chavelo can do about it. Several other places also got robbed by these guys that night too. Interesting way to do it...one guy takes the watchman into the office saying he wants to rent a room...then has no change to pay for it and says he will come back with change..meanwhile the other guy is taking stuff from vehicles and then they drive away.

I hadnt heard about the Terra Sal robbery...what happened?

Udo - 10-28-2015 at 06:14 PM

Hola Shari!
In my instance, Shari, I would have liked Chabelo to keep his promises (I'll go into it in a PM if you wish with you).

Yeah, any other info on the Terra Sol robbery, I plan to stay there next week, although no open truck. thnaks

Udo,
Very unfair to blame the owner for your loss. Hotels should only make reasonable security arrangements, they cannot protect you from all thefts. Hotels can't and should not be responsible for losses due to your own carelessness. You are solely responsible for having the sense to not leave valuables in your car!

Udo - 10-28-2015 at 07:06 PM

Fair enough Mtgoat.

BajaBlanca - 10-28-2015 at 08:14 PM

boy oh boy

theft everywhere

If someone wanted to steal from the cowboy, they certainly could but I liked the fact that it is further set back - I also thought that the same person who was at Malarrimo might still be there since the theft was so recent.

My stuff was locked in the car so they would have had to break a window to get in. I would have been very, very saddened since I worked very hard to buy so much stuff for the teens!

windgrrl - 10-28-2015 at 08:41 PM

We have had no problems, other than a few flat tires and flaky Internet, in the past 10 trips through Baja from top to bottom. We have stayed at RV parks, Catavina, hotel parking lots, Cowboys and Hotel Terrasal, had good service at all stops and take the usual precautions to secure our stuff.

I always like to see a night watchman and especially a resident dog. Not much gets past the neighbourhood dogs. At Posada Don Diego, Vicente Guerrero, the RV park is not protected by walls. One morning we woke up to find the the night watchman in his car beside our 2 rigs watching over things.

I don't think the problem of theft is particular to Baja. There's people looking for an opportunity wherever one goes.

motoged - 10-28-2015 at 10:29 PM

Several years ago one of my ride buddies decided to enjoy the pleasures of a dancer from a club in San Felipe....they had their party in his pickup truck cab in the motel parking lot....and the night watchman was awake at least for that few hours ....and nothing was stolen from his truck....except maybe his heart for a few days...as he had that faraway look for Esmerelda ....

Organizing such a list by Nomads is kind of like big government managing people's lives....it ain't their role

Whale-ista - 10-29-2015 at 10:51 AM

^^ Perhaps not an "approved" list, but at least "recommended" based on actual Nomad travel experience.

That's one reason I enjoy reading Nomad's posts that include reports and details about various places to stay (or avoid). I have offered my own when I find something worthwhile that's new or off the beaten path (e.g., La Huerta in San Ignacio or Maru in Rosalillita).

So instead of a list- please continue to post your trip reports and related "reviews." They are appreciated!

Hi Shari,
I guess I am low on the scale of nomads' standards cause I think the Dunas is just fine. Ultra cheap, the rooms are Spartan but clean and the foam mattress on concrete base is fine with me. On this trip I stayed at Hotel Ballenas which is just a bit more but has really good wifi and the owners are very nice.
For just an overnight hotel I don't need much, quiet, hot water, wifi.

I hope to get to Asuncion on my way north next week. I'm on the bike while Kathy is at home waiting for the new grand daughter who is expected to make her arrival in the next few days.

For an inexpensive overnight we have often used Hotel Ballenas --- very basic, and as you said the owners are great and live right there.

That would be good for at least 50 pages! We enjoy some places that others won't go near and visa versa. We have rented houses that were filthy and where the sheets were not changed, and others write raving reviews. We enjoy the Mission Hotel in Cataviña and others have nothing good to say about it. I don't think there would one place where there was total agreement, not one.

So it would really be quite impossible to have a "Nomad" approved place --- that is unless Doug wants to play Triple A as he is Baja Nomad.

It might be a fun read, however. Then again, probably not.

shari - 10-30-2015 at 12:54 PM

Look forward to seeing you Kurt!
You have to check the beds at Las Dunas as some are terrible...the new foam mattresses are good though and wifi works best in the end rooms. We stay there alot and like the location if we are getting car work done etc as it is central and lots of stores nearby...great coffee across the street too.

Hotel Ballenas is also nice and quiet and a family operation but the rooms are a bit tired and need a carpet upgrade.

UnoMas - 10-30-2015 at 07:40 PM

Another Malarrimo incident,
My wife and I stayed there in a truck and camper. We were parked up against the back wall in the R.V. spots. The wife went to take a shower in the ones provided.
The windows had been broken out but replaced with plywood, there were holes carved into them....While taking her shower she thought she saw someone watching her through the peep holes. When she exited the shower she walked around the back side to fine a employee standing on the propane tank that had been watching her shower. :fire:Just wanted anyone in the same situation to be aware.

BajaBlanca - 10-31-2015 at 03:37 AM

whoa, that is awful. I sure hope you told someone from Malarrimo? Awful.

even though I stayed at cowboys, it is definitely not safer, so to speak. There is no guard and no dog, but there is a narrow entrance and the vehicle was right in front of my room. I just wanted to avoid he robber at Malarrimo's.

Bajahowodd - 10-31-2015 at 04:41 PM

Face it. There is not a secure parking lot at any hotel in GN.

In our travels over the years, I really can only remember Hotel San Nicholas in Ensenada that has a security guard 24/7, and is fenced in,
and the Hacienda Suites in Loreto that has a walled parking lot out back that gets locked after sunset.

Admittedly, as was previously post (goat?), There is almost no totally secure lots on the peninsula, but the two mentioned above are as good as it gets.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 10-31-2015 at 05:20 PM

2 more centavos...

JARDINES in san quintin has a night watchman that DOES watch.
i walked to the parking lot to get something out of my trailer around 3 a.m. and he was definitely watching AND wide awake and again at 6:30 a.m., he was there when i went to get coffee.

THE OLD MILL in san quintin has a courtyard parking lot and i never had a problem there.

also in loreto, HOTEL ANGRA has a large, secure parking lot and they close the front gate at night ( only gate ) and open it again around 7 a.m. very nice english speaking and very accomodating owners on site.

verdugo's in los barriles is safe and they close the front and back gates in the evening, around 10 p.m.

maybe 2.5 centavos ?

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

La Misiones in Ciudad Insurgentes has a locked parking lot...nice clean and very friendly hotel - 6 rooms just south of traffic circle on west side of ro :light:ad

UnoMas - 10-31-2015 at 06:35 PM

Chuckie you are right on. Don't think beating a local would work out well and calling the cops has never worked out for me in Mexico!

rtts551. My wife walked out of the showers and around to the back of the building and CAUGHT the guy standing on the propane tank where he was peeking into the showers.

mtgoat666, say what you want but WE know what happened! Just posted this so others will have a heads up, nothing more.:P

OK UnoMas , since it wasn't my wife that was being watched while showering i'll just give him a very firm head shake .

This reads like the old book, "Eating Your Way Through Baja" but for hotels!
It's actually a pretty good read. Maybe a page here on just hotels (as a sticky that could be added to) so everyone who wanted could make a short comment good or bad of where they stayed, how much and conditions?
Like a NomadsTripAdvisor, but then again maybe the suggestion has been offered before and I'm not aware of it.
Or maybe someone with nothing to do but watch the sun come up over the Gulf could codify all the comments and make a separate post in an organized fashion?

Sorry for your troubles, and thanks for the heads up. I have not had anything stolen in Baja yet, but I can sure be a lot more careful!

I had my tripod stolen last night. Until I found it behind the back seat of my camper this morning.

Crime and sex deviants everywhere in Mexico. Traveler beware.

Ain't just in Mexico; it's a universal situation. Had a friend about 6 years ago stop in Tucson on the way north, favorite motel, well-lit lot with video cameras. Woke to find his camper door window broken, and his enclosed 6x8 trailer with the lock cut.... long story short, cops called, figured it was an inside-job set up by employees.... no arrests, no return, yes insurance. Cameras and laptops are replaceable, but contents are not. Still very upsetting. Even locks just keep honest people honest.

I think though in Baja, and especially most of Mexico the rise of the lawlessness over the last 10 years has created even more of an 'open-door policy' for thieves to thrive and enforcement to diminish. IF YOU LOVE IT, LOCK IT. I don't see or believe there will be any changes in trends in the near future, from Corvallis to Los Cabos.

Another short story; years ago in San Lucitas there was a local tweaker wreaking havoc stealing to feed his habit; no one was safe, Americano or Méxicano. He was warned a few times by the local Constabulary... then they gently 'persuaded him one night on the outskirts of town with a blanket/sock-and-soap party. He's been a model citizen ever since.... but i'd leave it to their Countrymen..... like vehicle accidents, an Americano is guilty until proven innocent; Napoleonic Law prevails. That is, IF you get caught.....

Have never encountered any sex deviants in Baja. But years ago, I was in the bathroom on the Staten Island ferry taking a whiz only to note that the guy next to me was beating off.

Never encountered anything like that in Baja.

I doubt Mexico will ever have as many sex deviants as the USA. Different culture.

Mexico only has 1/3 the population of the US so you are correct Tio.

Regardless of the culture there are a lot of sex offenders in Mexico. Read the local news, there are stories all the time about women and children being abused, I've personally heard first hand accounts of some pretty sick stuff that goes on here in our little village.
