Speaking of hotels...how to contact Hotel Maru in Rosalillita?

I'm updating my Baja contacts and found a few old posts about Hotel Maru in Rosalillita. I'm trying to determine which # is current.

So Shari- do you know which is the best way to reach them these days? And names of the family who operate the hotel?

i spoke to Maru a month ago. her rooms are all rented out by the month now. you can try but don't hold your breath.

yup...we really like Hotel Maru...beside the store at Sta.Rosalillita...only 10 minutes off the highway...super quiet, 350 pesos, very comfy bed, clean, good shower, beach right there for a nice walk...no restaurant though so bring food...tell em Shari & Juan from

We stay at the little hotelito in Sta.Rosalillita...it's only about 10 minutes off the highway on a nicely paved road...the beds are a bit small but very comfy. It's a good option to Catavinia and on a beach! Hotel Maru, 615-159-1642 or 615-157-1263 or 646-162-1413 let me know if you want me to call them and make a reservation for you...it's not fancy but has good hot showers & is very clean and quiet.

Santa Rosalillita is about 100 miles drive south from Cataviña and El Rosario is 76 miles north. A third motel option is Bahia de los Angeles, also at 100 miles away... but even further off Hwy. 1 than Santa Rosalillita.

I have since stayed at the hotel in nearby Rosarito (9mi So. of the turn to Sta Rosalillita) which is a better room with an excellent shower and a decent restaurant next door. The name is either Maricios or La Cienega.

yes, Maru is renting by the month and I just called her and she said no rooms are available right now and that she will let me know when that changes.

Good thing for her that she has lotsa business....Woody had previously indicated it was due to Japanese aquaculture business interests in the bay.

I saw a tv program last night about Vietnamese or Chinese abalone farms....HUGE collective operations...went on for miles along coastlines...

Maru said the Japanese have bought the rights to all of the sardines along the central coast and were planning to use overhaul the marina to offload the boats, then freeze the sardines for transport to the tuna pens. my Pueblo Spanglish might have the minute details wrong but she said they need housing for 400 additional workers.

yeah, but they still need to build out the marina so that it is functional and install whatever equipment that will be needed to run the entire operation. the entire town is set for rapid growth, housing, food, healthcare.....

but like many projects in Baja, some never make it past the drawing board.

I also heard tales of some big project being constructed just a bit north of the village that is said to be an aquaculture project that will have land based big tanks.

Very sad that the sardines will be overfished...there arent any around these days as it is....so maybe it wont proceed if we are lucky

That's the Chilean Yellowtail fish farm that's being constructed
I am doing a camp trip in that area end of next week.
I will have 3 Mexican friends with me to inquire for more details

there has been an abalone farm in la bocana for as long as I can remember and a couple years ago they built a brand new facility that is pretty awesome out at Bocanita.

Does anyone know if Hotel Maru is still open? I tried the numbers listed above but couldn't get them to work.

Or if someone could recommend another place to stay nearby, either along the coast or in Punta Prieda or Rosarito We are going to be on enduro bikes and packing light so looking for a place with food and hopefully gas as well.

not to jump the thread, but is the Yellowtail fish farm still in operation? I visited it two years ago, and they were very secretive and did not want visitors. But even from the road in front you can see huge holding ponds and infrastructure. Wondering if still in operation.
I am assuming it is if Maru's place is always 100% full with the workers at the Farm

Gasoline is sometimes available in an emergency to gringos from Jessy's Market.
The restaurant across the street was very good (Ramona's, unsigned)...

Abarrotes Jessy has some really cold beer! I went back and forth a couple times two weeks ago and it was nice to know there'd be ice, beer and basics to replace what the mice got into.
